4 out of 5 stars Questions you need to ask yourself...   April 2, 2008

1) Was it as good as Life on Mars? No. br /2) Does that matter? No br /3) Was it better than 95% of current television? Yes br /4) Would the people winging about it rather have this series than not have it? (In all probable honesty, Yes) br /5) Was it a success on most levels? Yes br /6) Were there always going to be people who didn't like it because they always prefer what has gone before? Yes br /7) Do you care about them? No br /8) Should this be purchased and enjoyed for what it is, not what it isn't? Yes br /9) Go on then...

5 out of 5 stars Good Telly   April 1, 2008

Ignore all the "it's not as good as......." stuff. Some people just can't see something as good in it's own right. Just look around and see the endless monotony of "Talent" or "Reality" garbage that we are fed these days. This was top quality British telly, an Oasis in a desert of detritus. Well acted, a decent plot, strong believable characters, as un-PC as the BBC could get away with and with bags of nostalgia for the fashion and music of a much rubbished decade, the 80's. br / br /So, unless like me you've kept it all on Sky+ anyway, stop being a Puff, tell Raymondo to fire up the Quattro and buy it you Div.

4 out of 5 stars Good - but not as great as Life on Mars   April 1, 2008

Yes, I too did mention Life on Mars - this series is bound to be compared to it - Life on Mars was compelling stuff, you bought the dvd and watched it all in one night - not so with Ashes to Ashes - it is good, it is not compelling. Philip Glenister is OUTSTANDING as Gene Hunt - indeed we could have a show with him and his two sidekicks - Ray Chris who are both brilliant. The character of Alex Drake - shot and transported back to 1981 is annoying, irrating and shallow - she is no Sam Taylor - perhaps it is the actress Keeley Hawes. Philip Glenister and co do not appear to be acting, their characters for that time period are truly believeable where Keeley Hawes appears to be "putting on a show" all the time. Leaving aside the bad acting of Hawes, while we were in the dark to a great extent about what was going on in Life on Mars, here we know - which perhaps diminished the edge of seat, must see the next episode urge. br /Alex is "trapped" in 1981 what to get back to her life and daughter - Gene fancies her rotten, what will happen? The last episode is really good with a good twist and there is a second series which I will be watching, but not with the same antiscipation that I had for Life on Mars. br /It is good, it is funny, it is enjoyable, but not it is not great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Time travel IS possible   March 30, 2008

It's a pity that so many reviewers are taking the "silly plot" line. They are missing the point that Alex Drake (like Sam Tyler before her) was brain injured in the 'present' and is trying to construct her life using the memories of her past. It's clear that they didn't consider this very carefully, but that's not TOO surprising, since most people are fortunate enough to escape serious traumatic brain damage in their lifetime. I wasn't - in fact, it happened in the mid-80s! I was even convinced that the costume department had sourced Alex's white leather bomber jacket from the PDSA shop I handed mine in to. br / br /I thought that this was a more enjoyable story than "Life On Mars" and the ends were neatly tied up in the final episode even though, being a bit slower off the mark these days, it took my wife to point out that she recognised the 'Bowie' clown as being Alex's father as soon as she saw him. br / br /OK, there WERE a few annoying points like (as was pointed out) the girl just running straight through the police cordon, Alex wearing the same outfit right through the series (maybe all the others did, too, but it was that infuriating "one-shoulder" top that did it) and a DCI and his three juniors running around with a handgun. I think that even in the '80s they had Firearms Squads or whatever they were called. br / br /For me, the main character wasn't Alex the posh totty but Gene doing his tongue-in-cheek "Dirty Harry" act - AND he's less 'wooden' than Clint Eastwood (as if that would be hard). Perhaps a series based around Gene would work, but probably NOT one 'time travel' after another. br / br /
