3 out of 5 stars Good but not a patch on Life on Mars   March 16, 2008

I think Ashes to Ashes has been let down by the change in focus from the main character which previously was John Simm but is now DCI Alex Drake Keeley Hawes- to a focus on all the police department . Whether they thought she couldn't pull it off- I think it is a mistake to draw in all the characters the beauty of Life on Mars was Simm's reaction to the people he met and there was always a distance between them built into the script, now the minor characters seem to just be playing for laughs. Still the series is good fun light weight and Philip Glennister is priceless as Gene Hunt and as ever the wardrobe choices for the 80's are spot on.

I just savour EVERY episode and they would be CRAZY not to comission another series. It's way better than Life On Mars. I was most interested in Life On Mars to begin with because it was set in the year I was born and it was a thrilling series, but Ashes to Ashes tramples on it. I was a little diappointed with episode 6 when strong minded Alex, woman of the noughties and tough cookie had a girlie moment and started squealing when they stuffed her in the freezer, but apart from that every moment in the series so far has been jaw dropping and I LOVE IT !!! I can't wait to recieve the DVD so I can watch all the best bits over and over again without ruining my VCR.

I know I haven't seen the whole Series 1 as yet but now I've seen 6 out of 8 I think the BBC have done well. Of course everyone will compare Ashes to Ashes to Life on Mars. Seing Gene Hunt along with Ray and Chris is superb. I was brought up in the early 80s so hearing all the music brings back memories. Also I think the BBC have played more music in this Ashes to Ashes series compared to Life on Mars. br /There are some good funny bits including episode 5 when they all go to a nightclub and Gene, Ray and Chris have a surprise. br /Keely Hawes is great in the series and give Gene is run for his money. Can't wait for the DVD to be released and let's hope a Series 2 is produced?

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing main character...   March 12, 2008

...but the rest of the series is great! I LOVED Life on Mars and was really looking forward to the followup. However I really think it was a bad decision to have someone else 'go back in time' in the same way as Sam did in Life on Mars. From the outset it made the storyline quite contrived, and the child is just simply annoying! Much better idea would have been to simply have a series based on Gene Hunt and his sidekicks as they are the stars of the show. You could simply have a cop show based in the 80s and it would work fine with the characters that are in it. I unfortunately think that although i thought it would be refreshing to have a female lead and to have the added sexual tension created between her and Gene, shes just not convincing me at all. If they wanted to put a bit of totty on the screen then just do it, dont try and make excuses for it! (i.e. if you want her to be part of a set up involving dressing as a prostitute and then conveniently not find any other clothes for the rest of the episode leading to running around in hold ups and red pvc then just do that). Its certainly improved in the last couple of episodes and the sets/clothes/music are excellent (even though I hear that the audi is a later model than the year the programme is set!).

.........and make no mistake he is the star of this particular show. He may have been spruced up a bit for the 80's but at heart is still the outspoken, tell em like it is, DCI Hunt we came to know and love in Life on Mars. br / br /If you have never seen Life on Mars you will still enjoy this show (possibly more) and if you have see Life on Mars then go in with an open mind - it is not Life on Mars series 3, nothing could be - it is a totally different show that happens to feature some characters from the old show. br / br /Trust the Gene Genie!
