5 out of 5 stars Does exactly what I want   August 21, 2008

I decided to buy a universal remote because my Viewpia TV didn't have a code for my Sky TV remote. After checking the Logitech database before I bought I found that all my equipment was listed, and therefore compatible. br / br /I didn't have any problems with the new software while installing, it works perfectly with my Vista laptop and I didn't find it slow either. The longest delay is while updating the remote which takes around 30 seconds, but only needs to be done once you've decided on all your settings. br / br /My setup comprises of the Viewpia TV, Wharfedale DVD HDD recorder, Sky TV, Acoustic Solutions Amp and XBox 360 with HD DVD player. br / br /I was a bit wary of using the Activities feature, because I'm much more used to just turning each component on with the original remote, and I did find it frustrating that the Sky box and DVD recorder were being turned off every time I turned the telly off (the Wharfedale takes about 20 seconds to fire up and as the TV signal is sent through it that meant a long delay when switching back on). This was easily remedied though so now the Sky and Wharfedale are left on all the time. Pressing Watch TV now turns on the TV and Amp simultaneously. Pressing Watch a DVD, or Play Xbox 360 also fires up the XBox. br / br /Each activity can be programmed to do exactly what you want using the customise buttons feature. For the Watch TV activity I've now set up the remote so that it controls all the main functions of the Sky remote as well as the DVD HDD recorder and the volume controls the amp, although as a back up I've also assigned the TV volume to the largely redundant * and # keys. br / br /Any extra functionality I want I've programmed into the LCD display which displays four selectable commands at a time (accessed by pressing the associated softkey). The LCD displays can be scrolled four at a time, so features that I don't use so often, like the Sky TV Guide or Services buttons are only a couple of clicks away. br / br /After setup I found that a few functions of my original remotes weren't listed, but the Learn IR Command feature is a breeze to use. I just typed in the new command I wanted the new remote to learn, pointed the old remote at the bottom and pressed the button I wanted it to learn. It immediately detected it and I had to press the button to confirm - as soon as that was done, the command was stored. br / br /I don't have a problem with the quality of the unit. The main buttons are large enough to use. The number buttons are on the small side, but to be honest, for a device with 50 buttons in total, that's a small gripe. It doesn't feel cheap and comes with a 2 year guarantee. br / br /One final point. When I unpacked it, it already had 4 Duracell AAA batteries installed, and four more were included with a note to say that I should replace the batteries before setting up. Yeah right....

5 out of 5 stars It Just Works   August 10, 2008

My wife bought this for me to cheer me up when I was ill. br / br /I have a TV, DVD player, Virgin Cable Box and Surround Amp. br / br /It works great with them despite my TV model being really obscure. br / br /Out of the box it was nigh-on perfect and with a mornings tweaking to service some of the more obscure idiosyncrasies of my TV, it is now an absolute delight. Can't look back. br / br /Don't be tempted by cheap universal remotes - This is in a different ball park - we absolutely love it. br / br /We are recommending it to our friends and family for Christmas stocking material.

3 out of 5 stars Good remote, but it could be improved.   August 3, 2008

Mine recently broke, so I'm in the market for a new one, but in two mines as to whether to get the same one again. br / br /I dropped it on the floor (carpeted) and the LCD no longer functioned, making it pretty useless. br / br /It's defiantly not as robust as it could be. I'd noticed that the motion sensing that turns the backlight on when you pick it up and off when its doing nothing, seemed to fail not long after I bought it. Meaning if it doesn't switch itself off, it drains the batteries fast. br / br /It was mostly problem free otherwise, the only issue I personally had was that when switching on my television (Samsung) it wouldn't always go to the correct input channel, which meant doing it manually on the remote.
