5 out of 5 stars Nice bit of kit   April 14, 2008

It's a nice bit of kit, but why, oh! why do they have to make the instruction manual so complicated. br /All most of us want is: br / br /1. How do you play a pre-recorded DVD br /2. How do you use the Hard Drive. br /3. How do you record a blank DVD br /4. How do you finalize a DVD br / br /Instead of writing a novel, why doesn't Panasonic just do a simple A4 br /sheet with these instructions for us simple souls who are not technical geeks. br / br /It took me hours to figure out how to finalize a DVD ( and believe me, I am not stupid). So how do old ladies and the such get on? br / br /Badly I suspect. br / br /Panasonic are not the only culprit. They are all the same when it comes to instruction manuals and I know because a few years ago it was my job to translate Japanese-English instructions into something that a normal person could understand. br / br /Apart from all that, it's a lovely machine and I can recommend it. The HD function is great.

Had this for a few months now - does exactly what I brought it for!! br / br /It doesnt claim to have a twin tuner - it can record onto dvd or hdd (good quality even on LP) and the inbuilt freeview tuner is better than the one in my sony bravia tv....(signal in my area is unreliable) br / br /Loads of storage - easy to use - loads of features I havent used yet.. br / br /Dont moan about a product for not doing something it doesnt say it can do!!

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad - But not good with recording subtitles and pausing live TV   April 2, 2008

Not a patch on my Humax 9200 PVR, but a nice bit of kit. The Humax is far better for day-to-day viewing recording. I got the Panasonic EX77 because it has one thing the Humax doesn't: a DVD recorder. br /Being a single tuner box it really needs to be used in conjunction with another tuner, either built-in to the TV or another box separate box, but this is easy to set up. br /It loses a star because: br /You have to choose before you record whether you want subtitles; you can't turn them on-off during playback. br /It can't really freeze live TV. You'd have to remember to set it recording to do so. br /It doesn't support Freeview Playback features such as series record. br /

3 out of 5 stars Freeview recording issue   March 26, 2008

This machine is fine, but - like others it seems - I stupidly did not realise that if you are recording a freeview channel then you are locked into watching that channel. A bit of a drawback, though one that is apparently shared by all (non-Japanese???) DVD recorders. br / br /It seems there is a solution, involving using a separate freeview box and connecting it to a second scart socket on your TV. However, I only have one scart socket on my TV, which needs to be connected to the DVD recorder. br / br /Does anyone know a way where I can set up both the DVD recorder and a separate freeview box, even though I only have one scart socket on my TV? br / br /Many thanks for any assistance

3 out of 5 stars Beware JPEG quality   March 10, 2008

I will send mine back. One of the reasons I chose this HDD recorder was because I have a Panasonic camera, and a Panasonic HDTV. You would think that jpeg pictures coming from my camera via this unit to the Panasonic TV look great.. well, they do not. Staight lines turn into jagged lines, and colours start bleeding. It is almost as if they are trying to upsample the thumbnails. I tried from SD card, I tried different image manipulation programs, nothing worked. I wrote to Panasonic and they advised me to lower the resolution on my Panasonic camera.. joke. I took the same pictures to a Sony shop and their HXD870 unit displayed them without problem (on a CD generated with Photobase, a program supplied by Panasonic with my camera). So this is the first time I will send a Panasonic device back, it is disappointing. Other than that, it is a brilliant HDD recorder, and the 1080p picture quality from standard DVD and even from material recorded from Freeview is stunning.
