4 out of 5 stars Bought from Amazon with 2008 maps   January 29, 2008

I took a chance on this having 2008 maps and am pleased to say that my one, purchased from Amazon, does! I also own a StreetPilot C320 but the battery has gone and it's one heck of a job to replace. Since I put it back together (still with old battery), it's had problems picking up satellites so I decided to go for the nuvi 250W. br / br /Overall, I'm pleased with it. br / br /Pros: br /- nice wide, bright screen br /- full UK post code search br /- Isle of Man maps br /- useful extras, per details above br /- the windscreen mount is good br / br /Cons (only minor gripes really): br /- the voice is the same as my C320, but doesn't sound as good, like the speaker is cheaper, but still OK br /- seems to throw in the odd extra direction on a regular route of mine, like "Turn Right" at a bend br /- only partial post code search in the Isle of Man br / br /Consider, but don't be put off by people's complaints, as if you look at Tom Tom reviews, they have troubles too. br / br /I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good, basic satnav system. br /

5 out of 5 stars Now with NT 2008 maps   January 20, 2008

I have purchased this unit(not from Amazon as I wanted the NT 2008 maps) and am really pleased with it. I was concerned, due to some of the reviews here, that the satellite reception would be poor - but thankfully this is not the case. br /When I switch it on, it generally has full signal a few seconds after the maps are loaded. This is a lot quicker than my old Streetpilot C320. br / br /The build quality and windscreen mount are very good. The user inteface is very similar to the older Garmin units and so is very easy to use. br / br /If you buy this now, make sure you are getting the latest 2008 NT maps so that you dont have to pay for the updated maps in a couple of weeks time.

3 out of 5 stars Good, if you can live with the quirks   January 16, 2008

I received the Nuvi250W as a christmas present and am happy overall with it. The maps are clear and easily readable as is the driving navigation view, mainly because of the wide screen, and it has found me new routes to old places that are actually quicker than the routes I normally take. br / br /However, there are quirks. The pre-installed map is already out of date (new road opened just over 18 months ago not present), the speed camera database is inaccurate (warning of a 40mph limit for a camera that has been in a 60mph zone for the 9 years I have known the camera), and the road directions only around 70% accurate (e.g. does not tell me I need to turn left when merging onto a road which does a 90 degree bend, tells you to turn off the road at junctions within S bends when you need to simply follow the road). However, the route on the 3D view and map views is accurate. br / br /Also be warned that even though the Nuvi has a mini-USB connector, you cannot use it when you connect to a standard mini USB charger (e.g. mains or in-car charger). The unit switches to PC-sync mode when plugged into these so Garmin appear to squeeze some money back from the "cheap" price by forcing you to buy their overpriced mains or in-car charger (although my unit did come with an in-car charger). It also does not come with a USB cable which is an absolute must if you want to download your own POI, favourite or update the speed camera database, maps etc.

4 out of 5 stars Good but with issues with getting signal   January 10, 2008

I love the kit and it is easy to use but it does have a little trouble getting a satelite signal sometimes. This can be frustrating at the beginning of a journey or when you are using pedestrian mode. As soon as you are between buildings the signal goes. Someone told me that you need to be in the open to get a signal as it is a visual thing rather than the wireless network technology. If there is not a clear visual path to at least one satelite you get a problem with the signal. br / br /Not sure how this compares to TOMTOM, but it is a frustrating fault. br / br /The screen is a great size and I had no problem with installing the windscreen fitting. Very easy to use and takes the stress out of driving. I definitely prefer the wider screen. br / br /It is superb the way it recalculates in seconds when you take a wrong turn and can find petrol stations and other places of interest really quickly. br / br /Be careful with roundabouts and keep an eye on the screen. You get a split second on the verbal instruction but this can be overcome by keeping glancing at the screen before a roundabout. There is also a bar at the top which always tells you the next instruction ahead of the verbal reminder. br / br /Neat bit of kit and a real relationship saver. br / br /So generally great, just be aware of the signal problems particulary when near buildings.

5 out of 5 stars Confused by reviews!   January 9, 2008

I had decided to buy a GPS. I read plenty of poor reviews and a few good ones for the Garmin range. Some of the poor reviews stated that owners wished they had gone for the Tom-Tom option. I opted for the Garmin widescreen with Euro maps at 155. What a bargain. br /Straight out of the box the GPS is intuitive and easy enough to use. Once programmed with favourites it is easier still. Reading the manual helps even more! br /I have sufferd none of the problems I've seen listed. It picks up satelites quickly in all the areas I've visited to date, re-calculates quickly when I decide to ignore the instructions and doesn't need the mains charger if it's plugged into the car. (I have 2 chargers from games and phones which do the job anyway but do this at your own risk). br /Problems? It would be nice to have the mute and volume buttons on the main screen. Other than that the first few weeks and several trips in mixed country have been great. br /Nice bits? Auto dimming of the screen at nightfall, having a greater knowledge of how GPS works that I do (it seems to re-set to the favoured options automatically, easy on the eye (4.5" widescreen, light and portable. br /Tom-Tom? Curiously at my sisters place last weekend there were a number of horsey types complaining about build quality, coverage, ease of use etc and asking where I got my widescreen from. I've also had a fair few people say that Garmin have a better reputation overall. br /Just hoping the good stuff continues. br /
