Impressed so far October 26, 2007 I. White 56 out of 58 found this review helpful
I got my new TomTom yesterday (1 day late due to postal back log) and so far have been extremely impressed with it. It is compact and yet clear to view. The verbal instructions give lots of warning of turns but with roads having a hairpin bend it has given the command "turn left/right" rather than "Bear left/right". What is uncanny is the way it can recalculate your route if you decide to go a different way. It even amazed my cynical wife! Another problem with the TomTom occurred quite near to my house. It tried to send me down a street that was blocked off a few years ago. I simply told the sat nav that the road was blocked in both directions. Problem solved! It now sends me the correct way out of my estate. br / br /All in all, so far I would have given 5 stars if not for two things. One, there is a lack of carrying case; something you have to buy extra, and secondly there is no mains charger. The TomTom is charged in the car and you have to buy a mains charger if you want to recharge in the home. Rumour has it that the TomTom can be charged very slowly (4 hours) via the USB port on the computer. Certainly the charge light goes on when it is plugged in. However, fortunately for me I have a Motorola mobile phone, and the mains adapter for the phone fits the TomTom. It recharges in no time at all. br / br /
I'm pleased with mine! October 13, 2007 Michelle (Surrey) 20 out of 23 found this review helpful
Well I have spent the past 2 months going through all the different sat navs and asking as many people as I could which they would recommend and everyone I spoke to said a Tom Tom. I wanted a small and cheap system that also worked in Europe ready for our summer holidays. Admittedly I've only had it a week and have never had one before and so far I have been really pleased with it. It was easy to set up and install on the computer, it hasn't yet fallen off the windscreen bracket which other people have complained about and it really does recalculate your route very quickly if you make a wrong turn - very useful with two small children who can be quite distracting. I bought the case too which I have to say is rather pricey for something smaller than a make up bag but it does seem to protect it well. All in all I like it but I am hoping nothing goes wrong as all the other reviews for TomTom say how awful the customer service it which did put me off a bit.
It works with reservations September 20, 2007 R. T. Payne (Perth United Kingdom) 27 out of 33 found this review helpful
Ok it works, but the supplied windscreen mount is useless, trust me on this... budget for an improved mount... br /I am still learning how to use this gadget.. I still cannot take to being given directions so a steep learning curve here.. br /It does not overdo instructions thankfully however at a couple of traffic light junctions involving turns it said exactly... nothing! Particularly on motorways it tends to tell you to bear right when all you really need to do is stay on the present road, confusing... br /It arrived equipted with the latest maps, which is excellent however it still managed to fall into the trap of trying to take me down a dirt road in a local town, and literally 100m away in my village it thinks an old track is a road... wonderful.. not!... br /The interface to TomTom Home worked fine although it was slow to do a map backup... hopefully not a comment task... and via the internet you may download updates and mapshare ... br /It has also managed to lock up on a couple of occassions... fortunately a switch off, and after a pause switch on has achieved a recovery.. br /The speed limit feature would be more useful if the unit had more accurate information.. it seems not to know some limits or has the wrong start and finish which leads to false alarms... however in my limited experience to date the speed camera feature did work well.... br /In summary it is a good unit however some effort will be required to learn how to use it. It will assist navigation however it will not replace good route planning and knowing where you are going.
