5 out of 5 stars Great for technophobes   May 23, 2008

I got tomtom one, just for occasional use and have found it to be brilliant. Very simple to use and I love the way it just automatically re-calculates, if you go off track. Well worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Good little unit - but TomTom technical support poor   May 22, 2008

Had to return my first Tom Tom after problems with downloading the latest map, which messed up the whole unit. The replacement wasn't much better, as it did not warn me of approaching speed cameras. After several calls to Tom Tom Customer Services I am still waiting for this matter to be resolved. If I have to return this unit, I will not replace it with another Tom Tom.The unit itself is quite good and quickly reacts to direction changes, although it does sometimes take you the long way round.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough memory for aqdvertised functions   May 15, 2008
Mr. J. R. Southorn (Scotland)
A larger memory is ESSENTIAL. My tomtom europe [bought for Christmas 2007] reported memory full when I tried to enter the name of my road! I tried to back my tomtom one up before doing anything else but during the backup it said I had disconnected the tomtom [not true]. Some files were corrupted. I managed to copy the maps into a separate file manually but after hours and hours and advice from the helpline the net result is that the tomtom doesn't work at all. It says no maps installed, and the map file is miles to large to fit in the 1GB memory. They have given me a returns number but the envelope [required] has not arrived 6 days later and I am about to go away for a while. I am not a happy bunny!

5 out of 5 stars TOP CLASS GADGET   May 7, 2008

Well I himmed and haaaed about getting the TOM TOM Europe. Especially after reading the reviews. But I'm very pleased I did. Fortunately it arrived in time for my mammoth trip to North Holland. What can I say it worked like a dream, having previously had a bump from looking at maps whilst driving in Europe a couple of years a go - if you haven't got a map reader in the passenger seat this is even better anyway! It calculates the route - tells you how far you have to go until the next turning, also the total miles to go. You can easily recalculate the route to include an extra stop, if you're going via Ferry rather than Channel Tunnel as I was. But it really came into its own when faced with road closures. What can I say, with a simple tap it recalculated my route within seconds and I was being guided through back lanes I would not have stood a chance of navigating. I was left free to glance at all the lovely windmills whilst it gave me directions, a real treat. I was squeaking with joy at my new toy! What would have taken me an extra 2 hours ended only adding 20 minutes to my journey, thank you TOM TOM. As for all the problem speak about the Tom Tom mounting, I had trouble removing mine from the window, couldn't get it off without putting a blade end under it. I think it must be important to lick the sucker pad to create a good suction, but it was solid and firm for sure. br /It also tells you where the speed cameras are surely this is cheating!? But hey pretty handy! I have plugged it into my MAC and it works fine with Leopard although I have not made a back up yet of the TOM TOM HD as suggested - I had the feeling this may take a few hours - an over night job to be left whilst I sleep. I give this bit of kit 5 stars for the price ( 115) I think this is invaluable. Especially as with road closures alone - that getting AA Route-finder instructions off the net cannot foresee and help you with! br /Unless you do a lot of traveling with work then perhaps it's something that the whole family can share for holidays or special trips away as might be considered a luxury. However I don't know how easy my mother would find it to work but she still can't do text messages on her phone, but for me the quick start guide was enough to get me working the entire thing easily within minutes. It's very straight forward to use and not at all complicated.

5 out of 5 stars Tomtom over garmin any day   April 29, 2008

Having used Tomtom for several years around the continent in the form of Navigator 5 on my phone i decided to upgrade it to a standalone unit that had all of Europe on it. In France this spring we decided to hire a Garmin 350 to see how it was. I admit that Tomtom can appear to have quite a few options to it and some people find the simpler interface of the Garmin easier. Personally I found the Garmin unit very frustratingly basic and unable to do simple things that my Tomtom unit had been doing for years (advanced planning and itineraries) to let me plan multiple destination trips whilst on holiday. Sometimes i simply want to know how long it takes to get from one place to another. Garmin does not allow this easily. br / br /The Tomtom is by no means perfect and the maps can sometimes be frustratingly out of date but mapshare seems to work well and the thousands of free updates I've received seem to have sorted some of the glitches out. I live in Edinburgh and if mapshare can navigate me around the nightmare the tramworks have caused I can only recommend it highly. br / br /One major frustration I had with the old Navigator was the inability to install it using my Mac. That issue has disappeared now with Tomtom Home. Software that installs on both mac and PC. It starts up whenever you plug your Tomtom in to the computer and tells you what updates are available. I must admit to being very impressed. br / br /I installed Tomtom home on my parents computer at the weekend and my father has finally been coaxed onto the computer after it being my mothers domain for 5 years. He's already updated his maps for free, bought speed camera updates and keeps phoning to let me listen to the latest voice he's installed. br / br /If you are swithering between Tomtom and Garmin like I have for a year.. I couldn't recommend the Tomtom One highly enough.
