works well but maps out of date from new April 12, 2008 I. sweetland (scotland) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
The tomtom software works well and the unit is easy to use. But it was annoying to find that although the unit was new the maps were apparently some two years or more behind and so out of date. I would have expected a one time upgrade to the latest maps but tomtom apparently don't think so. br /The cost of maps means it is hardly much more expensive to buy a new unit.
I would be lost without it April 12, 2008 G. J. Weeks (London) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought it for my first drive to Europe. I found it much better than sat nav on my Hertz rental in the US but it still takes a while to get used to what she means with some instructions. You need both eyes and ears. Once she froze on me precipitating not a little marital tension. Warnings about bad experiences with connecting to the net meant I did not try to update before the trip and some places were a little out of date, but it was good on the whole, Around London I find her choice of quickest route is too much the choice of major road which I doubt are fastest and she doe not know some short cuts. The warning sounds could be more creative. It does not update time automatically which is disappointing and in bright sunlight is not easy to read.
SD card slot April 7, 2008 Sheepdags (London) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
good value but only thing is why take away the sd card slot as it would be easier with that to slot in a map of usa when needed? I think earlier versions of tomtom one had the sd card
"TomTom - take me home, bitte!" March 28, 2008 FlyingDigger (BFG, Germany) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Great bit of kit - so far only used in Germany but it has performed impressively. br / br /As with any bit of computer-type kit, you need to be aware of its limitations and look after it. I would recommend backing it up onto your PC almost immediately, and then downloading all the nice extras like traffic camera locations (which so far have been very accurate). It is very easy to use, the night-time colours option is effective and it recalculates routes quickly. On the day setting, even with the sun shining on the dashboard there is enough contrast to be able to read the screen and the sucker for the windscreen is fine. br / br /There are enough features in it that you don't feel like it is over-simplifying the whole art of driving/navigating but equally it will get you home without any dramas. br / br /Sometimes you need to use all the info on the screen to judge which turn off to take on the Autobahn, as two or three junctions can be located in quick succession and determining which one you want with the map alone can be misleading (I've turned off too early a couple of times), as there is a little bit of lag between the car's map position and the car's actual position on the ground. So you need to read the 'Distance to Go' in the bottom of left of the screen or, actually read the road signs for where you want to go! However, when I have gone off at the wrong place the TomTom has worked out how to get back on route very quickly and without dramas, and when that hasn't been possible it calculates a whole new route and off you go. br / br /I have had it hang up on me once, where I couldn't get it to calculate a new route after I dropped someone off at the airport and it just stopped, thinking that we were stationary when I was already back on the road. I had to plug it back into the computer when I got home and it came back to life again. Several thousand kilometres later and no problems since. br / br /Definitely my new favourite toy. You need to learn how to use it to its best advantage but that's half the fun. Would also recommend getting the case and charger bonus bundle to keep the screen protected and allow it to run for long journeys.

I spent ages reading reviews and looking at the different options for a sat nav, while making do with my trusty A-Z. The reviews about TomTom support were off putting and I very nearly went for the Garmin. However, my children were very keen to have a novelty voice on the sat nav and I must admit I was concerned that I would get very tired of listening to the same voice giving instructions. The Garmin only gives that option, unless you are very technically minded. We have had this TomTom now for a week and have given it a run through its paces. It is very easy to use and finds satallites quickly. It was no problem connecting to OneHome and maps/speed camera/extra voice updates were very easy. The unit is a nice neat little box - I think a widescreen would be too obstrusive. My only gripe is that the instructions don't make it clear how long to charge it up for. The first charge lasted a short time, which is apparently normal. I am looking forward to having a more stress free drive in Europe in the summer. I see amazon have lowered the price since last week, which is Sod's Law! Buy something and then never look back! The Portable DVD player I have just ordered has gone up 20 pounds in three weeks!
