It's good but there's a small problem March 2, 2008 R. Leal (London, UK) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I've been using this for a few months and I find it to be great, but there's a small issue with its software. After a few months my tomtom just wouldn't switch on. I first thought I would have to send it back, but managed to fix it myself at the end. What I did was to connect it to the computer and reinstall the whole software. I bet there might be a few people who would think their tomtom needed repair or something. It's not a big deal if you have a computer and have the tomtom software (that comes in the pack) installed in it, but anyway it's an issue tomtom (the company) should pay more attention to. Nevertheless I still find tomtom to be the best GPS device among its range. It's simple and does what it says.
Does what it says on the tin February 21, 2008 Andrew Hill (UK) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
Can't complain with this although it seems that some people bought this thinking they could use it abroad. If you wan't a capable sat nav for the UK only then this is the one. Only don't buy the add-on of a windscreen holder and charger as described. One the charger has the wrong connection, two the windscreen holder kept falling off and three...and this is the best one...it already comes with both!!! Why would you want 2??? It's not obvious it comes with either.
Does the job, very user friendly February 21, 2008 Mr. F. Ghillani (UK) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I needed a sat nav that would get me from A to B, no extras, no complicated options, just a simple, user friendly gadget. br / br /Just so you know, with this Tom Tom, I've got it SPOT ON! br / br /First of all, the price was very good compared to the high street sat navs, which is a very good start towards a good review (:P) br / br /Secondly, the packaging is perfect and everything's there, easy to see and use (not a low-cost product as the whole packaging and manuals are in colour and no brown cardboard like some other products out there). This meant I did not have to look at the manual to understand what went where (it isn't really that complicated anyways, but sometimes you read manuals just to make sure. What I am saying is that in this case there was no need). br / br /Thirdly, upon switching it on, it takes you through an introduction to the software and shows you how it works. This is very helpful, shows TomTom's commitment to make the gadget user friendly and easy to use - pretty much plug play! br / br /Basically, that is it! How awesome is that? it registers your home address immediately that way you will never have to put the address when you want to get back home, just choose navitage to-home! Same applies with all other addresses which you can add as favourite and navigate there in 1 click :) br / br /Other options include having traffic light signal, speed camera detection, speed detection speed limit warning (although in some cases it tells you the speed limit is 30 on the motorway, this has happened to me a couple of times when i pass under bridges where the limit is inferior to 70 - I assume an update on the software could sort this...) Another intelligent extra is having the night-screen option which uses different shades of green, lowering the contrast/brightness ratio so that it does not blind you (or distract other drivers) when driving at night. br / br /Customer service is exempt from the score below as I have not had the need to contact them :), and with the assumption the software update works, it is an all round, GREAT value-for-money 10/10!!! br / br /
Flawed sat nav February 7, 2008 Falken (London) 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
Firstly the pros. It`s a nice little unit and the extras are great. You can get corrections for the maps online and the safety camera alert which beeps before you see the camera is helpful.... br / br /BUT. It is a navigation product first and foremost and this is where it falls down. While showing a left turn on the screen it has told me "right turn ahead". While showing a right turn at a junction it has told me "go straight ahead, then straight ahead"!!!! It advises me to turn off a duel carriageway and join it again 2 miles later when it would be easier, quicker and safer to just go straight on. Its distances are out by quite a bit. It will show "35 yards" to a speed camera when I am just going past it It will tell me to turn when I am practically on the bend. This poses a problem as you are told to turn when you are practically upon the junction. Very dangerous. br / br /I`m sorry I ended up with this. I`m going to get rid of it and try a different make. br / br /Gets 3 stars for the extras, points of interest, a "help me" function which shows exactly where you are to allow help to get to you. Shows your nearest hospital, doctor, garage, petrol station etc etc. br / br /If you love snazzy extras, this is for you. if you want a functioning sat nav, look elsewhere. br / br /As I said, it`s got lovely extras, but what`s the point if the navigation is flawed to the point of being dangerous.
