It was going great...till it ended... July 16, 2001 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
The movie the game did a wonderfull job at grabbing your attention and making you want to sit there and watch the movie unravel right in front of your eyes. It should have tried not so hard. The movie's ending (which in this case you could say was 30 minutes long), seemed like they made the movie, noticed it was too short, so decided to totally 180 the meaning. Some would say thats called a twist, which I thought was great, until it did it again. At that point I was just bothered. I was hoping to finish the movie with a great review, because it was done so well upto the kicker of the movie, then it let me down. Next time keep it at one meaningful ending and you might have yourself a winner.
An oft-overlooked masterpiece March 15, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ah, 'The Game' - aka 'The Other David Fincher Movie'. People often forget about this when discussing Fincher's career, often opting on concentrate on the (unfairly, in my opinion) maligned Alien 3, the 'return to form' Se7en and the career high for all concerned Fight Club. If you ask me this is a mistake, cos 'The Game' is a real thriller. The direction, as with all Fincher's movies, is taught and claustrophobic, and the top-notch script is littered with more twists and red herrings than even the likes of 'Wild Things'. Douglas and Penn wheel out their respective trademark 'disillusioned fat cat' and 'paranoid guy with ropey past' performances, but hey, if it broke don't fix it. Just don't let the person you're watching it with reveal the ending!
RETURN TO THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO March 6, 2001 RH MEDLYCOTT (Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
25 Years pass and Michael Douglas returns to the Streets of San Francisco but in a different guise. The camera work often gave it an other worldly presence; particular the vision of his father standing on the roof and then jumping to his death. California itself looked very European, strange and unfamiliar. I liked the way the Game suddenly commences and there's no introduction; things start to go very strange. Suddenly he's lost and the control freak is suddenly on the run from unexplained forces, people or things. The scenes that particularly got me was the Hotel Room laden with Cocaine and Porn. The other scene being the one where Grace Slick's voice suddenly booms through his mansion house. The song 'White Rabbit' reverberates around the day-glo walls. Were the scene and script writers influenced by late 60's/early 70's San Francisco. 'White Rabbit' has metophores in some of the lines. 'One Pill makes you larger,One pill makes you small' or 'Remember what the Door mouse said,Feed your Head!'. Well Michael never chased any rabbits. He was the one being chased. Shades of Hitchcock or a European Art movie; a Fassbider or Bergman. I was disapointed by the Mexico scenes or the end which made it seem unrealistic. I thought that the Director would go with the dark ending on 'Se7en'; it a silly ending too nice and happy ending to and otherwise very enjoyable thriller.
Dark and moody but excellent June 8, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
David Fincher just can't help but make dark, disturbing masterpieces. Here he plays with reality in a way later echoed in Fight Club, is it real or is it all just part of The Game? The cinematography like his earlier Seven is fantastic, the acting (particularly Douglas) is great and the twist at the end is twistier than a twisty turny thing. I really like this film but the DVD version means that instead of it being 5 star it's a 4 star - there are no extra features, such as film commentary or storyboards - otherwise excellent.
Is this the real life or is this just fantasy? March 9, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
'The Game' is one of my favourite Michael Douglas films, along with A Perfect Murder. As the film is based around such a marvellously novel idea it is never obvious what will happen next and the outcome is completely unexpected. 'The Game' will swallow you up, immerse you in a fantastic plot, spin it around in your head and spit you out on the other side of an enormously enojoyable film. You'll wonder what happened to cunning plot ideas after this.
