Difficult to spoof blood and gore but... May 12, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think I must be the only person in the universe who has not seen Shaun of the Dead. This was my first Pegg experience and I dare not watch anything prior for fear of "ruining him" for me...For those who did not like this film because it was too "Arnie" with all of the firepower etc...all I can say is that was the point. This is a spoof! I am not sure how I managed to rent this movie because I am not usually a fan of the "anihilation movie" (I think the goose probably had a lot to do with it...) but I am very glad I did! I do agree that there was more gore than I had expected (sleepy village amid rolling hills...you have to reckon the goose is going to be the most dangerous thing our hero faces, no?) and that there probably should be some sort of warning. If, however, there will be no kids around and you feel that you have been properly warned about the gore, do NOT pass up this "hot" and "fuzzy" experience!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! May 2, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've just watched this film for the third time and I still laughed! The best comedy to come along for a long while.
Surprisingly Good But Beware!!! April 22, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The hype that this film received in the media was immense, with the Beeb interviewing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost everywhere you turned. Then, showing key scenes to whet the appetite, the TV critics reviewed it in great and surreal tones.
Here, thought I, is a good British film that I can watch with the wife and have a good laugh at to boot. The fact that it co-starred her favourite actor [Timothy Dalton] was just another bonus in an already prepared sense of impending fun.
But that was all we were aware of. The story tells of a copper who has gone from Hendon to the Met and has a record for nicking everything that moves. His colleagues get a little miffed and shove him out to pasture to a country village that has as its claim to fame, won the best village title forever. Not wanting to go, he is forced to and finds himself in a village where something seems to be definitely wrong.
Teamed with Nick Frost's character Pegg begins to unravel a growing crime spree that when fully revealed just happens to parallel the tale of the copper in that much better film, The Wicker Man. The fact that Edward Woodward stars in this just lends to that reminder of both plot and film.
So, because of the star studded British cast, which is great to see in this day and age, it is a film that can be watched and laughed at with gusto in places. If not sure, check out the revenge of the goose near the end.
But I do have one reservation; we as an unsuspecting public were never made fully aware of some of the more graphic scenes. My wife is of the squeemish sort and as such, could not watch past a certain point. Some of the murder scenes are too graphic even for my tastes and that is going some!!!
Buy it and watch, if you have the sturdy aptitude. If of the upseeting stomach brigade, beware. I enjoyed it in places, but was surprisingly disappointed by the gore. There was simply no need to go that far.
If those scenes had been handled to let the mind work out the gore rather than see it, then the film would be sheer genius and funny as hell, but we are not all perfect are we Mssrs Pegg et al?
Disappointed! I watched it once and then listed it on ebay.
Fun British Comedy April 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
What drew me to this film was Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Having seen them in various things before and loved them that was enough to make me want to watch this movie and I wasn't disappointed. For me it seemed to be very much in the tradition of the rather silly British Comedy and I thought it was a lot of fun and well cast. I loved the references to other movies, the cast list of many of our best actors was impressive and the music was great. This is a movie I will happily watch again.
FORGET RUN FAT BOY RUN THIS IS BRILL. April 16, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I watched Shaun of the dead and thought it was very funny. I watched Run fat boy run. Funny yes but not as good as Shaun etc. To be honest it was a bit of a let down. *** Then*** I watched this. GREAT FILM It is probably the funniest film I have seen in a long time. Hell it even made the wife smile so it must be good. Here we have the seen it all, done it all, wonder cop from the Met force shifted out to the sticks cos he's showing up the rest of the cops. He suddenly gets involved in murders galore. It's great and very, very funny. I still laugh and I must have watched it a dozen times. Watch it and have a laugh. Steve Marsh
