3 out of 5 stars 50/50   January 16, 2008

This is a film of two halves. The first half contains all the comedy, and is fairly entertaining. The second half is pretty much constant action, allbeit spoof action, and is, in my opinion, tedious to the point that I felt I could go and get a drink without pressing the pause button. Also I find myself only half convinced by the Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright partnership. Simon Pegg's performances are great, and I've enjoyed almost everything in which he has been involved. Wright's direction on the other hand I find irritating. He strikes me as the kind of director that needs to be noticed - like a bad referee at a football match. Edgar Wright can't film a carton of milk being opened without overblown sound effects and a "dramatic" slamshot. Good direction should go unnoticed by the layman but Wright is just so in-your-face that you're not allowed to forget for one minute that you're watching a movie, and that these are sound effects you're hearing. Hopefully in future, Pegg will either work with a different director or Wright will grow up and discover the joy of subtlety.

5 out of 5 stars "Great comedy on hd"   January 15, 2008

This entire disc seems too good to be true. Not only is the movie entertaining and satisfying, but the video transfer is gorgeous, the audio packs significant punch, and there are approximately eighteen hours of entertaining supplemental materials. br / br /Judged in comparison to the standard-def DVD, the video and audio packages are both significantly improved, and this HD DVD even includes ten hours of features that aren't even available on the US-released DVD. br / br /Simply put, in my opinion, this is currently the best overall high-def release on the market -- especially when you factor in the price. Purchasing 'Hot Fuzz' on HD DVD is a no-brainer for fans and an easy recommendation for newcomers. This is what high definition is all about. br /

4 out of 5 stars Fits "The Bill"   January 12, 2008

Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost prove that "Shaun of the Dead" was no fluke. The hilarious chemistry between Pegg and Frost is infectious, as is the obvious fun that the cast had making this movie. The plot's silly but irrelevant with such a high gag rate, which is kept up for a running time of almost two hours - great value. Belly laughs for anyone with an offbeat sense of humour, and fans of "The Bill"!
