Really great product that can still be improved September 13, 2008 J. Edwards (Norfolk, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Tefal Actifry is a functionally superb piece of kitchen eqiuipment. We took ours to France in the motorhome. No residual smells inside and we even cooked with it outside! Having chips with your barbecue attracts a lot of attention though. Everybody wanted to know where we bought it etc. One thing that we noticed is that although it is very expensive here, they are actually more expensive to buy in French Hypermarkets, although Tefal is a French brand. br / br /The chips honestly don't taste like deep fried chips, but they do taste very good - lovely and crisp on the outside. Also good are little new potatoes, or salad potatoes, sprayed with 1 cal butter-flavoured spray 'fat' and 'roasted' in the Actifry. The calorie saving is very significant but they are still really tasty. We have also, when pushed for time, cooked oven chips in the Actifry. They have a much better taste and crispness than when cooked in the oven and children will eat them, whereas they generally hate oven chips! br / br /The Actifry is also easy to clean and feels much safer to leave on when children or animals are around. br / br /The areas for improvement are: br / br /aesthetic design: it's the ugliest piece of kitchen kit that I have ever allowed to cross my threshold! You have to have a fairly large storage space because you wouldn't want it on view when not in use. br / br /construction: as people have remarked, the clear plastic bits do feel very flimsy, although we have managed to avoid breakage so far br / br /manageabilty: I also found that the casing does get very hot indeed. br /The cool to the touch claim is untrue, I'm afraid. br / br /capacity: despite the bulk of the machine, portion sizes are really child-sized in the eyes of true chip-lovers (my man!) br / br /I have to recommend it as a good buy though, but would advise that you don't get one as a substitute for an existing fryer. Wear that one up first unless you are very wealthy !! br / br /In the meantime, wake up British manufacturers and make a cheaper, better version, with a more interesting name and sleek shape !!
Strangely enough... September 10, 2008 P. V. Davis (London) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I haven't done what it's supposed to be best - Chips. br / br /I've now had the Machine about three months and successfully cooked Bacon; Sausages; Mushrooms; Lamb chops and also roasted potatoes. I roast the Potatoes on their own but have done jointly, Chops and Sausages and Bacon and Sausages. Four Lamb chops and six Sausages will cook in around 25/30 mins. br / br /It's a real boon and a lazy way of cooking but I would also advise that when initially cooking anything, to keep an eye on things because until initially "Oiled up" either in their fat in the case of Sausages and Chops or Oil with Potatoes or Chips, they can get stuck whilst being turned by the Paddle which risks breaking it, if not cleared. br / br /Only other negative point is that the Timer doesn't halt the cooking and it's beeping is pretty feeble. Poor oversight by Tefal for such an expensive item. I use my own portable timer.
There are two versions. September 7, 2008 P. S. O'Donovan (London, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought one of these units at Christmas and loved it. After a few months, the stirring paddle cracked at the blade end and the entire unit was replaced. br / br /The replacement unit has a different and improved paddle design with a catch at the top that locks the base into place - The original unit was a push fit design. The photograph shown by Amazon on 07/09/08 is of the first version. br / br /This really is a remarkable and very well designed product, it can cook many things apart from chips and it is well worth experimenting. Some opinions are that the chips are as good as a deep fat fryer, I don't think they are at that level, but they are pretty good. br / br /Where this device really excells is in cooking fatty foods such as sausages or meatballs, as these cook, they leak oil which remains in the tray after cooking. It means a sausage is has a lower fat content after cooking than before. br / br /The stirring also browns very evenly as the food is tossed, rotated and repeatedly passed under the hot air stream. br / br /I'm a kitchen equipment enthusiast, I thought I was taking a bit of a gamble when I bought this unit. I've spent the odd hour watching QVC or similar and it's clear that most of the items they sell won't get much use after the first week as they don't do anything new. br / br /By comaprison, we have used the Actifry at least once a week - The deep fat fryer is in storage as this is a worthy replacement and far more versatile. br / br /The Actifry is a genuine innovation, it fries chips using very little oil, it also produces excellent results with other foods and as I'm writing this review, I'm aware that I'm yet to try many of the recipes in the booklet that comes with the unit. br / br /Cleaning is pretty easy, the parts fit into the dishwasher, the paddle can be awkward to wash by hand, but that is an inconvenience rather than a real problem. I would love to see this unit supplied with two paddles and two bowls.
Tefal Actify September 6, 2008 Vicki Gould (Cambridgeshire) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have bought many gadgets before and they've more often than not ended up in the cupboard or given to charities. Not this one. I've had it for about 4 weeks now and have used it nearly every day. Chips were the first thing I tried and I was so pleased with the result and they're low in fat - a bonus. br / br /I also love new potatoes, two garlic cloves, sliced carrot, sliced parsnips, peppers and mushrooms. The taste is fantastic. You just have to cook the potatoes first for about 7 minutes and then add the other vegetables according to how long they take to cook. I just took a guide for this from the suggested menus. Try 'roast' potatoes. I part-boiled Maris Piper potatoes, which were quartered, dried them and then cooked in the Actifry for around 30 minutes, depending on quantity. They are much healthier than roasted in the oven and taste fab. br / br /I've also cooked chicken, lamb and beef, which were also a triumph. br / br /I'm very pleased with this product and have no hesitation in recommending it. br / br /Vicki Gould
