5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live albums ever   October 5, 2003

I saw Free back in 71 on one of their farewell tours before their final split. I think live they have passed the test of time and for me this ranks alongside The Stones - Get Yer Ya Ya's Out and The Velvet Underground Live at Max's Kansas City for atmosphere and marking a point in history. A great start with Alright Now, really great fun with Fire and Water, Mr Big and The Hunter balanced with the more gentle I'm a Mover and Be my Friend.pIconic, short lived and if only we could see them live again.

Catch me on a certain day and I'll swear "Free Live" could well be Free's best album - because here they play with an intensity that matches, if not surpasses, even their best album work. pBreaking this almighty beast down into it's components you'll notice from the moment you hit "play" that Rogers' singing is rawer and more emotive than ever before, which is to say nothing of Kirke's drumming, which is absolutely astounding and able to change tempo and style with impressive fluidity. Then to add to this there are Fraser's bass lines, which are fat and groovy and finally Kossoff's guitar riffs, which come screaming out of the speakers and pretty much nail you to the wall. Add them all together, not forgetting that these are a fine bunch of tunes, and I think you have possibly the finest live album ever to be released.pAlso, as much as I adore the original album, the extra tracks included on this reissue are possibly even better - certainly the "new" versions of "Mr Big" and "Alright Now" which have been added easily surpass the "original" versions included on the album. There is also a fantastic version of "Woman" and a rumbling "Walking In My Shadow" that really enables Rogers to flex his vocal muscles!pHighly recommended!

This album was played to me constantly by my best mate at school, but I only realised the brilliance of this band much later. The bass lines are awesome and the moment when lead guitar and bass switch from rythmn to lead in Mr Big is a defining moment in rock. From the opening chords of fire and water to the riff laden hunter the whole album is a masterpice

5 out of 5 stars Free to rock and roll   February 13, 2002

Firstly, a tip of the hat to Island for re releasing the entire FREE catalog in a stellar fashion with great production and beautiful packaging and amazing bonus material. Strangely, this album was released after FREE had broken up for good as a result of personal problems and band infighting. What we're given is a souvenir of one of rock's truly great outfits. Paul Rogers peaked as an artist with this band. Andy Fraser never enjoyed the same succees again. My only complaint is that the live tracks are not presented in the order they were performed. The box set puts them into the correct order and is the complete show.
