Back with a vengeance! March 10, 2008 Mr. Michael Butler (Melbourne, Australia) 2 out of 10 found this review helpful
Forget the rest because here's THE BEST! The undisputed Queen of pop returns with a call-to-the-dancefloor stomper! In a nutshell, "Hard Candy" cleverly references Madonna's entire music history, but most noticably "Madonna" (her debut album) and "Bedtime Stories"! And that's no mean feat! So, if it's upbeat, frivilous, tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek fun that you're looking for, then take a bite right now! br / br /"Hard Candy" was always going to have big shoes to fill after the success of "Confessions On A Dancefloor", in much the same way that "Music" would following "Ray Of Light"! Useless comparisons will always be made to what has come before, especially when what has come before has been such a global triumph! History will show, though, that initial resistance and criticism quickly dissolves into gushing accolades and cries of "I never said it was a bad record" when all has been forgiven and forgotten! br / br /The album has a subtle hip-hop influence, so hardcore fans need not concern themselves with unnecessary comparisons to the likes of Rihanna or Nellie Furtado, whose stars will fall as quickly as they have risen! In fact, it's fairer to say that the album has a funky, underground club vibe, which is what catapulted Madonna to fame in the first place! br / br /In addition to the infectious, horn-driven lead single "4 Minutes", there are many high points to be found! "Candy Shop", with its camp, innuendo-laden lyrics and irresistible "sticky and sweet" hook, sets the tone, finding Madonna in the most mischievous place she has been musically since "Erotica's" Dita graced our turntables (or CD and mp3 players) back in 1992! Welcome back, I say! br / br /Elsewhere, "Give It 2 Me", with it's circus-themed synths, and the divine "The Beat Goes On", which are destined to be follow-up singles, prove that the material girl remains well and truly "Into The Groove"......and then some! Madonna and dancefloors were simply made for each other.....and you're invited to join her at every turn! br / br /Detractors will state otherwise, of course, all the while shaking their heads at the audacity of it all, but could their envy be anymore transparent? As the lady says herself: "I've heard it all before"! Watch them all recoil in horror as Madonna tops the charts again and laughs all the way to the bank......oh, and mops the floor with contenders that are half her age but have only half her stamina! br / br /If you've got it, flaunt it! And Madonna has plenty to flaunt, in spite of protests to the contrary that ageing is unforgivable sin! How many 50 year-old women do you know that look as hot as Madonna? br / br /
