Rotak 40 June 9, 2008 S. DAVIS 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Having tried many different lawn mowers this is by far the best I've ever had.The second to the lowest cutting height seems to be the best height to use as the lowest height cuts the lawn too short and the higher ones are better for earlier in the season. My lawn has never looked so good. Highly recommended.

I bought a Qualcast Elan 32 three years ago and I've been struggling with it since then. Awkward to carry, useless unless the grass is half an inch high and perfectly dry, badly made, difficult to adjust, with a power switch that releases itself every three minutes... I couldn't face another summer with it. br / br /The Rotak was the obvious choice to replace it after reading the reviews. br / br /It was dead easy to `assemble' for a start, unlike the Qualcast, which involved forty minutes of cursing. I had the Rotak up and running in ten minutes. Even the grass box seemed easy to fit together. The trick is to line up the lugs, then thump them into place with your fist. It was child's play. br / br /The carrying handles are a big deal for me because the Qualcast Elan was really awkward to carry around. You can wander about with the Rotak in one hand. For a big-ish mower, it's fairly light and easy to carry a few yards. br / br /It feels quite a big machine at first because the handle extends so far back. But you soon realise this is so you can pivot it on the back wheels really easily, so turning around at the end of the lawn is a one-handed operation. This is a very well balanced mower and more manoeuvrable than the smaller Qualcast. br / br /The chunky height adjuster is a doddle too, specially compared to the horrible lever on my old mower. br / br /As soon as you squeeze the power lever (a metal full-width bar thankfully), you know this Rotak means business. My first cut was about three weeks' worth of growth and the thing I noticed straightaway was how the sound of the motor didn't change, even over some thick tufts of what passes for grass on my lawn. It's obviously very powerful. br / br /I had to go over every bit of grass several times with the `old' Qualcast, but the Rotak managed it all in one pass. Very impressive, especially how it goes right up to the edge too. Effortless. It took me just ten minutes to finish the job, compared with at least 30 using the old mower, or up to an hour if I've let it grow too long. That's going to save me electricity apart from anything else - not to be sniffed at when you're using 1700W of power. I almost wished I had a bigger lawn! br / br /And I only had to empty the grass box twice, instead of the usual five times. The mower starts to leave little clumps of grass behind when the box is full. br / br /I was surprised at how well the rear roller striped the grass. br / br /There's no cable tidy on this mower, but I find the cable tucks very neatly under the sprung flap that the grass box fits under. br / br /So, what's not so good about the Rotak 40? Hmm. Perhaps the only thing I can think of is that at 15m, the supplied cable is just a bit short considering the size of lawn this will cope with, so I reckon pretty much everyone will need an extension cable. br / br /If this mower proves to be reliable, and being a Bosch I suspect it will, then I think I have found the ideal mower.
Makes my rough uneven garden look like a luxury lawn! May 12, 2008 Rob (London) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this at Homebase as it was a bit cheaper than amazon at the time ( 111). I've been struggling with a Flymo Compact 330 for the last year, which became too heavy and unpleasant to use, even with the grassbox only half full - not helped by the fragile blade buckling over at both ends! This was because I have an uneven and rough garden of about 130 feet long, so I wanted something that could handle a big garden and yet be light and dare I say pleasant to use. br / br /The Bosch Rotak 40 is a terrific machine, well worth the extra money you have to pay over the likes of the Flymo Compact 330 (which I notice is still rather scandalously on the market). For my first cut using the Rotak my lawn had grown quite long, with flowering dandelions and stinging nettles sprouting up in the grass, particular around the parameter fences which the Flymo wouldn't touch. Pleased to say the Rotak made short shrift of the mess before it, cutting it right back (on the next to lowest setting) in nice stripes! Unlike the Flymo I didn't have to go over my tracks again as it was so well cut at one go, saving huge amounts of time. The really impressive part for me is its capacity to cut grass right up to the fences, even great long grass with brambles growing in it. In half an hour it looked as though my garden had grown wider! br / br /The only drawback is the slower than usual setting up of the grassbox, which i did in my living room as i had been warned of this. It comes in three sections which are all snapped together. The plastic is thin so I wanted to do this carefully, and it took a little longer than I hoped. Because it's not a hover mower, it is also less immediately easy to manouvre around the lawn, but I found I got used to the new way of mowing quickly. Highly recommended if you want a lightweight lawnmower which cuts efficiently and impresses the neighbours.

This lawn mower is the biz !! br /I have normally had Qualcast before and then tried Flymo (don't bother as they are awful - mine burnt out after less than one season). This Bosch cuts really short and it's motor is powerful enough to suck up everything in it's wake. It literally is like Hoovering the lawn of any leaves or rubbish and is ideal if, like me, you've got a big garden with a lot of trees. It was a little more expensive than the Flymo that I bought but, quality wise, is several streets ahead. You will not be disappointed
