If you only have a small desk space, this is the scanner for you! br /It can stand vertically on your desk! br / br /The quality of the scans is FANTASTIC and it is very fast! br / br /No power supply needed (it feeds of your usb power). br / br /I have used this to scan in an oil painting I have laying around and when you scan at 1200Dpi you can see the brush strokes in all the full detail. It feels like you could touch the strokes! Scanning in from other items is easy and the quick access buttons are FANTASTIC! br / br /Buy this scanner, you wont be disapointed!

This scanner replaced a 5-year-old HP ScanJet 7400C which never recovered from a system lockup caused by an expansion card! It was either this or the 4400 so I went for the one with no need for a power cord. It's about the size of a coffee table book, the platen is bright, shiny and clean (the HP's was always dull and dirty looking even on delivery) and the software just 'feels' stable, although I agree it looks a bit clunky. The software install went OK: I had an error message when I connected the scanner but this cleared after a reboot. No problems inserting scans into WinFax, unlike with the HP. Other comments: (1) it scans quite 'strongly', so if you insert (say) a signature into a Word document it also picks-up the background, and this requires some adjustments; and (2) it takes a 'mini' USB B plug, not the usual one, so if you place your scanner more than about 1 metre from the PC you'll need a different (or an extension) cable. But overall, and for the money, it's 5 stars all the way.

As a graphic designer I use a scanner for flat colour artwork and general office jobs. I hardly ever need to scan trannies so I opted for this model as it has an add-on transparency unit if needed - unlike other scanners which have extra thickness in the lid to house the tranny scanner. The scanner works well with Mac OS X ImageCapture (scanner software). CanoScan Toolbox software functions well - although the interface design looks very dated compared to other OSX applications! The scanner reproduces colour drawings and prints very accurately. At higher resolutions it is slow - but that does not bother me much for those occasional jobs. This scanner has a copy to print button (acting like a photocopier) so it's really handy not having to adjust a scanned image in Photoshop before printing to my black and white printer. Similarly the copy for email button places a scan into a new email message. I love the scanner's elegant silver design which compliments my new imac. The lid feels a little flimsy though, but it has not been a problem so far. I am very pleased with this scanner and think it is good value for money.

This is my first scanner - it looks good, is light, easy to use and performs well. There is a super attachment for film negatives which slots into place. There is no plug cord as it connects via the USB so another great functional feature. Also with a detractable (and pullout) stand on the bottom the scanner can be position at about a 60 degree angle. The lid opens 180 degrees, and being multi-hinged is thick enough to scann a book with the lid down. Am i impressed? yes. Scans quickly at 300dpi. br / br /Comes with lots of software which i am still trying to get my head around.
