 Superb entry level DSLR October 21, 2008

I've had many Bridge cameras before, thought upgrade myself to DSLR and I'm glad I did. DSLR's are the real deal, with all the mirrors and prisms and the feeling of mechanical movement when taking pictures is not something you get with bridge or compact cameras. Don't let the 6M pixels come in the way, thats good enough for prints upto A3. Picture quality is stunning, functions are great auto and manual, specially if this is your first DSLR its really simple and easy to use. Great value for money. The ONLY additional item I had to buy was HB-45 hood for outside photography, around 4.99 on ebay.
D40 versus D700 October 15, 2008

I took this camera out with a 55-200mm VR lens and in good lighting conditions got good results. See www.gridline.co.uk The D700 with 70-300mm lens had better resolution allowing more cropping, however if you get close to your subject the D40 in normal light is just fine. Why spend the extra 2 000?

I kept this camera for abt 6 months. I have a Canon 30D and a Canon Powershot A710 IS plus several film cameras.I have loved the Nikon D40 and I ve liked most of the photos I've taken with it outdoors in cloudy days and also with long exposures during the night. The camera performs very well in those situations with any lens. Indoors photos show minimal noise up to iso 1100.For higher iso values the noise increases dramatically. Iso 1600 is in general unusable. Default colors are over saturated but they can be made softer trough the many adjustment options offered in menu. Picture quality drops significantly in high light situations, typically outdoors in a sunny day. It is possible to limit the damages by shooting at minus 1 or 1 and half stops but picture quality remains rather average or poor. White higlights appear very easily, colors lose their nuances. Of course once you know the limits of the camera you will try, if you can, to avoid the critical situations . If you can't then the camera is not for you. That's why I'v sold my one. Mecanically the camera is superb and its shutter noise is...music.

This is my first SLR camera and I've a huge interest in photography and I'm up for learning a lot of things about it, I've been recommended by many Nikon D40 owners I know, including online by research, and buying this has not made me regret it for one bit! I thoroughly recommend it. :)
