5 out of 5 stars A must for all HI-MD player owners   March 16, 2005

What can be said about this product?pIf you own a HI-MD recorder (also available on Amazon) then this is a must buy. You will not find this product cheaper anywhere else.pIt may be more expensive then a regular minidisc, but at over 3 times the capacity, and having the convenience factor, this is well worth it.pIf you consider how much you would have to pay for either a 1GB MP3 player, or a 1GB USB storage drive, then this is a real bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Small discs - big boxes!   February 15, 2005

These discs are great - apart from the price, and the overlarge size of the plastic cassette. These latter are more like the box for a cassette tape than for a Mini Disc - please Sony go back to the standard protective box size. These might be fine for archivists but the main thing I like about my Mini Disc walkman is its compact size - these boxes are the wrong 'form factor'!

5 out of 5 stars Large Scale Music Storage!   February 7, 2005

These mini-disks really bring the storage capability of hard disk players to the mini-disc format!brThe sonicstage 2 software is much improved over the first edition and when ripping CDs to your harddrive and then onto mini-disc all the songs are categorised nicely.pActually getting the songs onto the discs is easy! Just put in the CD, use the CDDB (song title etc database) to name the tracks and then rip to your hard drive specifying the bit rate (I used the second lowest quality and it still sounds likea dream).brthen it just requires you to record to the minidisc and its done.pBut these discs hold more than just songs. they are recognised as mass storage devices. It means that you can store 1gb of Word files, PDF documents, movie files etc. These cannot be opened on the player (The played will say "Empty Disk" even though there are other data files on). You just plug it into a usb port and windows recognises it and you can just transfer files. Easy as that! Its a great alternative to CD's if you want to quickly transfer some stuff across to a different PC etc.pOverall these discs are great. They store a lot (I have about 150 songs and am only about 1/4 full). The packet they come is is really professional looking (Is bigger than 80min discs and has a hinged lid).pI highly recommend these discs to music fans if you want alot of music on one disk!

5 out of 5 stars At last an alternative to the iPod   February 1, 2005

Yes, I have dared to speak up in support for the 1GB minidisc, br(and against the over-priced and flawed iPod ).brMy argument has always been one of reliabilty over fashion accessory. Sure you can store 10,000 songs on a 20GB iPod, and yes that is very appealing.brBut hard drives are unreliable (just look at most PC's), a crashed hard drive takes all of your pre-recorded music and data with it. The Sony 1GB Hi-MD disc is far more practical, reliable and sound quality is far superior.brWell history will be the judge of this.brI will just add that I do find the iPod and other hard drive players to be very desirable, but until the unpredictabilty of the hard disc is sorted out, I will stay with the the minidisc.

4 out of 5 stars HUGE BUT EXPENSIVE !!!   January 19, 2005

The new 1GB discs are fantastic for storage of both audio and data. Up to 45 hours of music on high compression! Thats nearly my whole CD collection on two little discs! However you could get many standard 80 minute mini discs for the same price as one Hi MD so the price will have to come way down for it to be worthwhile. I'm going to stick to the standard mini discs for the moment which can be formatted to suit Hi-MD recorders and can hold just over 250 MB. Great product.... NASTY PRICE!!!
