4 out of 5 stars Preferable to Norton   July 17, 2008

br /When I used to use the full Norton Security suite, I could never just ignore it. I'd get bugged by pop-ups, e-mail scanning and constant warnings 3 months in advance to update my subscription. I even had to download the special Norton removal tool to get rid of it in the end because the regular uninstall feature left loads of files behind in the registry. br / br /McAfee is a nice improvement on Norton as far as I'm concerned. Although I personally don't need the 'Parental Control' features, it's useful for families who want to supervise their children's internet activity. br / br /* Most useful: 'Spamkiller' and 'Data Backup' were actually features I made full use of. It's quick and painless to back up files as soon as changes have been made, and I found it more stable than Microsoft's backup facility which often gave me a 'failure' message right at the end. br / br /*Spamkiller is easy to set up even if you've never used an email filter before. You can set up your own filters (and/or use the preset ones for the usual suspects!). However, I suggest changing the default setting from high to stop it filtering out mail you want. But even if it does, you can easily retrieve it and add it to the 'whitelist'. br / br /*Bad bits: Site Advisor. Maybe not bad exactly, but it reminded me of AVG's LinkScanner which spent forever deciding if a site was safe to view. Unlike AVG, you can choose NOT to install Site Advisor. If you don't need parental control, then you don't really need Site Advisor, unless you're happy with it choosing what it thinks is safe for you to view! br / br /Finally, if you don't have a clue how to change the settings, then just leave them. The default settings are fine for people who don't want to get confused about what to change. I'd only advise changing the Spamkiller settings though. And for those who don't mind playing around with the settings, there are a ton of options available to tweak to your own preferences. br / br /If you think McAfee is too expensive, then AVG, Zone Alarm and Spybot (all free) are very good alternatives, easy to use and don't conflict with each other. br / br / br /

Im used to using Norton. In comparison the McAfee Internet Security Suite has a few shortcomings but its pretty easy to use, didnt slow down my PC much and was reasonable value for money with its 3 PC protection.

3 out of 5 stars All round PC protection   July 17, 2008

Like many internet security packages McAfee have allowed this program to be installed on 3 of your home computers which is handy for me as I've got a desktop and a laptop. Like others it installs antivirus and firewall to protect your PC. Installation was a bit long and asked to remove some programs which I had to re-install later which was annoying. It slowed my pc down but not as much as Norton has in the past. All in all a reasonable PC protection.

4 out of 5 stars Had no problems with it.   July 15, 2008

When I got this had a look at the reviews I was a bit scared of installing it after reading the handful of negative reviews! However, I steadied my nerves, and although it took a while to install I've had no problems with it yet. I haven't yet had any viruses the product seems fairly easy to use navigate, although I still can't see why anyone would pay for this when you can get free products that do the job adequately (such as AVG).

This suite does pretty much what you would expect it to, it's a Virus scanner, firewall and spamkiller; all work well as far as I am aware and are unobtrusive. Installation was easy, ir paused while it requested that I remove AVG virus scanner before continuing installation and then resumed without problems. The only issue I encountered was during the registration where I took five attempts to create a password in the format it required (8-32 characters, no non-alphanumerics but including at least one number) only to be told that the login I was using already existed. Well I couldn't remember having logged on to McAfee before so I requested my password and lo an behold the password it returned didn't comply with the format it was previously requesting (Grrr!). This isn't isolated to McAfee of course but seems to be a general issue with online sites generally. br /Anyway, in addition to the stuff listed above it has a site adviser which is useful, and which appears to work - I visited one of the many known dodgy sites to test it - and it has a parental control which is simple to set up and which includes has a very useful Internet time limit function.
