Ok now 5* is the rating but this may not be the tv for you , Im over the moon with mine nad did a few months trolling around , it really was a toss up between this and samsung ( which has double the contrast range so blacks are better ) however and here is the biggy that clinched it for me the Samsung while having better still images ( it really is like looking through a window ) falls down on picture prossesing and fast moving images tend to be pixelated on the trailing edge so if your a sports or action movie fan like me its probably worth the sacrifice and plump for the panasonic, bear in mind once youve got the tv your virtually commited to get the vera dvd/blu ray and home cinema at some point in the future so you can be in one remote heaven ( factor this into your budget because you will regret saving the extra few quid by mixing and matching trust me . Oh jl do a price match and provide a free 5 year no quible garantee ( which will save you the price of a home cinema system if brought elsewhere if they have a store within a 25 mile radius ) happy viewing ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Great TV   August 29, 2008

This is undoubtedly a fantastic TV.
Received it today, easy to set up, fantastic picture on Freeview - I was quite surprised as I expected the picture to worse than my old CRT Tv. Especially for some reason on analogue channel 4 it is superb, but that must be down to my arial. However, this tv is excellent and makes the best out of the picture signals it is given. Haven't had time to check it on Blu ray in HD, but will do tonight. But with the proof from the Free view, I am sure HD is going to be great.
Such a cheap price aswell! Highest spec for the price that I have seen, and i've been researching for ages!
All in all i'm very happy!

5 out of 5 stars Class leading performance at the price   August 20, 2008

If you haven't read all the other reviews, suffice to say this TV is doing very well in the reviewer stakes. However, it does actually perform as well as described.
Compared to equivalently priced LCD's, the picture quality is superior; it is of similar sharpness, but colours, particularly blacks and dark details, are far superior to LCD, and equivalent to CRT.

Ergonomically, the remote and menus are easy to use.
Sound is adequate for normal programmes; anyone serious about home cinema will have (or need) a surround setup.
Switched off, it looks unpreprossessing (as much as 42+ inches of black rectangle can do), unlike e.g. the LG models with holes in them.

Switched on, it is quiet - the cooling fans are just discernable if you put your ears right next to the top of the TV, but not from a normal viewing distance.

Earlier serial #'s had problems with an obvious electrical humming; any good retailer should swap those out. Models supplied now should not have this issue.

Negatives:
- there's no PiP - would be a 'nice to have'
- the gloss finish shows the dust up

This TV is just awesome. The last time I was as impressed with a TV was when colour TV first appeared - it's that good. HD content is almost 3D in appearance, it looks like you could reach into the screen and pick the flowers. Two friends that saw mine both went out and bought one straight away. How's that for a recommendation?

Even on Freeview it does a good job of cleaning up the picture, of course you don't get the fabulous HD resolution. On analogue it shows what teletext should have been all along. give it a minute or two to buffer the text then you flit from page to page instantly.

The PZ81B receives Freesat, Freeview and Analogue transmissions. It also has an SD slot so you can put your SD card out of your Digicam or Camcorder and play the content as a slide show or movie. Here again the results are amazing.

As with all these flat panel TVs the on-board sound is pretty thin - there just isn't room for decent speakers. Connect to your Hi-Fi and it really comes alive!

If you want this TV with Freeview and Freesat Free-of-charge try this. Cancel your 50 a month subs to sky then in less than 2 years you have paid for this beauty. As you already have sky just take out the sky box, plug the satellite lead into this TV, plug in the aerial and way-to-go.

One small caveat at this time, Channel 5 and Dave are not yet on Freesat, but both are on Freeview.

Go the whole hog and treat yourself to the matching Panasonic Bluray player BD30 and the BBC "Planet Earth" box set - then just sit back and be amazed.

NOTE this review applies to the UK version TH-42PZ81B NOT the European version TH-42PZ81E
