Cable tv vs internet tv

I'm considering going the Internet tv route (Apple Tv, Hulu etc) as I've seen my cable bill rise to $130 a month. Any pros, cons or recommendations?

Re: Cable tv vs internet tv

For me I have Dish Network (Family Package, Heritage Package, + Locals) I pay around $40 a month.
Then I use Hulu, YouTube, Crackle etc.. to watch the non-pay for view movies.

I would suggest you create a list of your viewing priorities.

One of the things to consider is do you have access to your local channels through other means? Antenna?
If so than depending on what you want to watch you can customize your choices.

Do you mainly want to watch movies, than Netflix may be an option.
Do you want to watch episodes of your favorite TV shows, than HuluPlus may be an option.
etc...

For me I will have to keep Dish for a while since my nearest local channel is over 70 miles away, and I would need to get to over 200 to pick up all the local networks.

Re: Cable tv vs internet tv

Internet TV is compressed and the quality is at best DVD quality. If your into HD content and want the best picture quality internet is a long way off from giving you that resolution.

Home theater:
Onkyo 805, Yamaha YDP2006EQ, Samson Servo 600 amp
3 EV Sentry 500 monitors across the front, 4 Mission 762i's Surrounds, SVS PB13U sub, Panasonic BDT220, Harmony 1100, Nintendo WiiU
Panasonic PT-AE8000 on a 120" 2,35:1 fixed screen

Living room system:
Sherwood/Newcastle R972, Mission 765's, SVS SBS02's, A/D/S MS3u sub, Yamaha YDG2030EQ
Yamaha KX-393 Tape deck, CDC 805 CD changer, Panasonic BD60, Sony turntable PS-T20
Panasonic TC-P50ST60, HD-PVR & WDTV Live, Harmony 900

Re: Cable tv vs internet tv

Here is a good article - http://www.kiplinger.com/magazine/ar...-cable-tv.html
There are other articles as well that cover this topic....

I dropped cable back in the beginning of 2009 and haven't looked back since. Most of the programs we watched were on regular TV so why not.

I did miss the ESPN channels for a while but now that ESPN3/ESPN stream stuff I am able to catch more than back when I first cut out cable.

Like mentioned above you have to see what your needs are etc.

Sports wise I watch NFL/College FB/MLS so regular TV/ESPN3/MLS Live cover that for me.

Re: Cable tv vs internet tv

We also cut cable several years back. It was just getting to expensive.

I have my laptop hooked up to the tv and the laptop is wireless for internet. Everything I want to see I can see via crackle, hulu, youtube, etc. Everything on broadcast tv via antenna is also available for me.

By the way, for the antenna, I use the leaf antenna which is very good. I get around 50 channels.

We haven't looked back. If your economic situation is where you can't afford cable, I say, cut the cord and don't look back.

Hi JQueen,

Quick question..

When you say dtv, do you mean digital tv? What you get from antenna?

With my antenna, I get multiple channels of NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.

The channels are all very clear and no issues with reception.

Thanks for the clarification. I still think outside of watching live sports from sat/cable, antenna is the way to go and the best part is that it is free. There are some sports on ABC/NBC/CBS but if you want college sports from ESPN, etc., you have to go thru them. For TV shows, the vast majority are on hulu and if you want to pay some extra you can go to netflix and hulu plus.

Re: Cable tv vs internet tv

I once tried going the Cable free way. Unfortunetly I found after buying a very expensive HD Antenna that I could not pick up any but 1 channel. So it didnt work out for me. This would of course depend on your local area broadcast signals. Like said previously it depends on your priorities, mine being HD quality always. I too would like to drop the ever expensive cable, but I have yet to find a suitable replacement that meets my desires.
