Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

Yes I know this appears in a million places, but not in a specific discussion on the following and in a short thread that contains several but specific opinions without wandering...

I have a very near zero to zero ambient light home theater.

I have a gallon can of Behr "Ultra" Exterior Flat #4050

My projector is a DLP with good light

My screen will be 110" 16:9

Please answer with your answer and why...

Should I add any shade to the 4050 or because I'm dark, just leave it white?

Re: Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

The use of Exterior paint inside a house is not a great idea as there are chemicals in it that over time leach out into the air and in a room this is not very good.
Adding some gray may give better contrast particularly better blacks so it wont hurt to add some. Usually the grayer the screen the better the blacks will be. but with a projector that hasn't got good light output the whites will start to suffer.

Home theater:
Onkyo 805, Yamaha YDP2006EQ, Samson Servo 600 amp
3 EV Sentry 500 monitors across the front, 4 Mission 762i's Surrounds, SVS PB13U sub, Panasonic BDT220, Harmony 1100, Nintendo WiiU
Panasonic PT-AE8000 on a 120" 2,35:1 fixed screen

Living room system:
Sherwood/Newcastle R972, Mission 765's, SVS SBS02's, A/D/S MS3u sub, Yamaha YDG2030EQ
Yamaha KX-393 Tape deck, CDC 805 CD changer, Panasonic BD60, Sony turntable PS-T20
Panasonic TC-P50ST60, HD-PVR & WDTV Live, Harmony 900

Re: Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

I'd agree with Tony's comments on exterior paint. No reason to take a chance.

As to white vs grey...it's a matter of personal preference. If the whitest whites are your thing, go with white. If deep blacks are your thing, a grey screen helps. You have the best of both worlds with no ambient light and plenty of brightness. Some will argue that a white screen is the way to go (and there's no benefit to grey) when you have complete ambient light control. But, you do still get (at least some) reflections from the room back to the screen, and a grey will still deliver deeper blacks in a light-controlled theater. Those deeper blacks come at the cost of the whitest whites, however. You may want to look at a mix that's a light shade...maybe Cream & Sugar.

Re: Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

It seems to me there is another good reason to go with a darker screen in a controlled light environment: better dynamic range. What I mean by this is that if your PJ has sufficient light output in a dark room you will probably adjust it to NOT use its maximum output on a bright white screen (that's what I did). This in turn means that the number of "steps" between black and white is reduced and also the number of steps for R G and B are reduced. If you have an 8-bit projector like mine (HD70) you will not be using the full 256 levels and as a result might see some stepping effects when there is only a small change in color (like in many flesh tone images). I'm not sure this is as much of a problem with a better PJ.

Anyway I'm going to try C&S first and if it is still too bright on max output I'll go with BW.

Re: Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

Seems then Behr UPW 1050 with some tint is the way to go, but what tint? Below is my set up.

Home theater: Onkyo TX-SR805 AV Receiver, Polk Audio RTI Series Speakers - Fronts RTi10 - Center CSi3 - Surrounds FXi3 - Rears RTi4, Sony Play Station 3, Samsung BD-UP5000 Blue Ray / HD-DVD Player, Infocus IN32 2000 Lumen Projector HDCP Compliance Provided By HD Fury (Replaced Infocus X3 under service contract, seems comparable)

Re: Simple Question That Seems To Generate Controversy

I am projecting on a white wall (not UPW) I think it's just plain builder grade flat a little off white... Looks real good though. I personally can see some difference between the picture quality of the IN32 and a $6000.00 Sony LCD, but not $5000.00 worth by any means. Besides the boss (wife) wanted the sound first, sooooo hence the Onkyo TX-SR805 AV Receiver & Polk Audio RTI Series Speakers.

Mostly I just want to give it a finished look and some improvement in percieved contrast.

Let me add though that we do enjoy whiter whites, especially the boss.
