This is pretty much my exact situation, but had a dark green instead of dark grey.

Sherwin Williams Grey Screen, matte finish. Used a 1/4" nap roller. Couldn't be happier with the results. Total cost was less than $50 including the paint, roller, frog tape and drop cloth. Only needed 1 qt to put on top of an already primed 105" 16:9 space.
Did you add compound and sand down the PJ screen wall? I hear that depending on the distance away, the texture can't be seen, so there is no need for this step. i'd like to avoid doing it if possible, but not at the cost of seeing all the imperfections. Also do you have any screenshots of your finished product? In dark and in light? Thanks again for any info you can provide.

Re: Neutral Grays and Simple Off the Shelf Solutions

I did lightly sand the surface of the screen area using 130 grit. But with the primer and matte finish, I got a pretty smooth surface that looks perfectly smooth from 2-3 feet away. I dont know that sanding did much to improve anything. I see no imperfections when watching movies. Certainly nothing distracting. Maybe if I pause the movie and look for issues I'd find something, but I haven't yet.

My last two images are from the matte finish. You can see the dramatic improvement in the blue test-pattern images.

Brightness will really depend on your projector and settings. I'll take a few new shots for you to see and post shortly. When I use "dynamic" picture mode with half the lights on, its more than passable for casual sports watching.

Here's a couple of shots I just took for comparison. Apologies in advance for the window that I haven't masked off yet, but at least its consistent in both sets of pics.

Pics of Matt Damon are in THX mode
Pics of Jack Nicholson are in Dynamic mode.

As you can see, I'm getting some pretty good color and brightness considering how much ambient light I've got coming through the window and with the lights on.

That paint gives a pretty good image for such a simple application. Thanks again for all of your help. Saved me some time and money!

My pleasure. Honestly couldn't be happier given the amount of money I spent on it.

I wanted to see if I could get "good enough" without buying a screen or doing a ton of work. And the answer, courtesy of this forum, is a resounding yes. Much much more than "good enough" in my book.

The only thing I disagreed with in this forum was the satin finish. It was recommended a few pages back, and I ran into some serious problems with it. If you look at my earlier posts in this thread, you'll see that I was getting very visible roller marks when I used the satin finish. When I switched to matte, I was good to go.

I have happily had a football game on with the lights on without any complaints. If you've got the lights on, you aren't doing "serious" viewing anyway, so there should be a lot of forgiveness in the quality of the picture -- at least on the brightness and contrast. But at night, with the lights off, I am getting very pleasing black levels when watching Gravity or Star Wars.

Re: Neutral Grays and Simple Off the Shelf Solutions

This thread and forum was amazingly helpful for me. At first, I was totally lost when trying to sort out all the paints. And there's some very vocal people who are very adamant about their solutions, some of which were quite expensive and/or complicated mixtures.

I wanted to start simple and cheaply since it was my first attempt. Figured I didn't mind blowing $50 and a couple of hours, but would be seriously annoyed if I spend hours and hours and hundreds of dollars and wasn't happy with the results.

A million thank yous to everyone who posted before me and did the serious research and legwork.

Also, there's a padding thread in the forum so you can get to your 5 pretty quickly.
