Paint Recommendation

I am building a dedicated HT room, around 13' X 19' with 8' ceilings.

The screen will be ~100" depending on a few variables that have yet to be determined (on teh right side of the room there is a lower area to accommodate some ductwork, need to frame it up to assess how big the screen can be exactly).

I will be mounting a VPL-HW30ES about 13' from the screen, and the room will be completely light controlled (total darkness is possible).

The projector does 3D, but I'm really more concerned with color accuracy (I like that you guys are citing numbers and not preference like some other places), and great contrast and black levels for watching 2D movies and playing games. 3D will be more of a bonus that I probably won't use a whole lot, but I'd like to keep it's functionality intact if possible while meeting the above goals.

I've read enough in the last 4 hours about the DIY paint solutions to make my head spin...so looking for some knowledge from the folks here based on my configuration and goals.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Paint Recommendation

Forgot to mention...the ceiling and walls will be a dark grayish blue (as of right now), and the carpet will be brown. So, dark surrounding the screen, and flat.

Re: Paint Recommendation

Welcome to HTS KungFool!

In a dedicated home theater with dark room surfaces and no ambient lighting on during viewing going with a white screen is a no-brainer. The only potential problem is if you use such a screen with a little light on in the room (like when having a party) it can really play hob with image contrast and black levels.

I assume you are going to be painting your wall. Probably the best paint to use, in my opinion, would be Glidden Premium GL9000 interior paint in what they call a "white/tint base" and in flat finish. This is the most neutral white paint I have ever measured and is also one of the brightest at N9.7 (N0 is pure black and N10 pure white - neither of those exist in the real world, or are at least very rare). This paint is sold by Home Depot, but you might have to look for it as HD stores are pushing newer paints from Glidden (the paint and primer in one nonsense).

Another choice (that I forget the exact neutrality of at the moment, but I think it was pretty good) is Glidden Professional Diamond 450 in the white base with no color added and in Velvet Matte finish. Only professional painter supply stores sell this paint (not Home Depot).

If you want to hedge your bet a little by using a very light gray screen without giving up brilliant whites I would recommend our Cream&Sugarô Ultra mix, it's not really hard to mix (only two paints), but you do have to thin it with water and stir well. Instructions are in it's thread.

Re: Paint Recommendation

Thanks! That's what I was thinking but wanted a knowledgeable opinion.

Would you see any benefits to using a substrate vs. a new, smooth wall?

And thanks for the welcome. I'll be posting my progress on the forums.

Re: Paint Recommendation

Went to Home Depot tonight and found the paint (I think). It matched the description exactly but is GLN9000, not the GL9000 mentioned above.

I tried to post a pic from a URL, it's not quite taking (I may not have enough posts?). Anyway, it's GLN9000 Interior Premium Paint Flat Matte White tint/base.

Thanks!

I think you are right. While my can only says "GL 9000" in the small ellipse near the top of the can, the actual paint number is GLN9000.

After you get 5 posts on the forums here your link will become visible (as it is in my quote containing it). In the mean time here is one I got from Home Depot. Note that while the can in the image has 9011 in the ellipse the actual paint is GLN9000. You got the right stuff.

Re: Paint Recommendation

Hey guys I am not 100% sure where to look but i was wondering if you could say anything about this paint vs the stuff Stewart makes etc? this may sound odd but would painting a canvas or vinyl with a paint give a screen like result such as the Stewart screens? or would a big ol' piece of drywall work?

Re: Paint Recommendation

I finished this room up, and I have to say the results are spectacular! Loving the painted screen (performs better IMO than a lot of other materials, and less 'silk screen' effect than fabric screens I've auditioned).

Anyway, thanks a bunch. I'll be posting shots of the build process and finished product soon.
