What is the purpose of the internal baffling?

Sorry, bit of a noob question here, but what is the purpose of the internal baffling people put inside their sub boxes? What benefit does it have over just simple bracing? How to people know the proper design of the inside of the box if the sub does not come with a enclosure diagram?

Thanks

Re: What is the purpose of the internal baffling?

The intricate shapes you see in some designs are usually nothing special. It's just for bracing and the only real rule is that the bracing should be mostly empty (non-obstructive). Some designs are just a matter of convenience (ie cutting the brace identical to the front baffle).
