Will you be using the same amp the sub came with? What diameter port and length did the sub have?
It was a slot-port that was very very small. 6" wide, 2" tall, and maybe 4" deep. This was in a 1.6 ft^3 enclosure.

I'd like to use the same amp. Whole goal of this project is just time and labour; don't want to spend any money on it as I'm just going to give it to a family member if it turns out.

1.6 cu.ft with a 6" wide x 2" high x 4 " long port would tune the box to 54 hz. Are you sure these box volume and port dimensions are right?

The Woofer Tester from Parts Express is your best bet.

I think the best bet is to actually buy a better driver. A woofer tester is probably worth more than this driver. I've not known Sony drivers to ever be fantastic.

Agreed, but if the OP wants to know the T/S parameters of this driver, the WT3 is a good home DIY solution.

I'll measure again to make sure...

But how do we know the box tuning without the T/S of the driver?

I think you guys are missing the jist of this thread. I have my own subwoofers. This isn't for me. This isn't about spending money. I am GIVING this to a family member after its done because they don't have a subwoofer. Its not going in my home theater.

If you build a lot of speakers/subs. Then a Woofer Tester would be a great tool to add to your setup.

The driver doesn't determine the tuning frequency, the box volume and port surface area and length do.
