Determining screen size for aspect ratio changes

I have my projector mounted and playing and it seems I will have media in both 16:9 and 4:3. How do you determine the proper screen size to display both ratios correctly with out being too large or small on one? I would think that being off on the size would be distracting.
Note: I am painting my screen on the wall once I determine the size.

Do you just take the width from the 16:9 and the height from the 4:3 and go with that?

Re: Determining screen size for aspect ratio changes

Your main frame should be 16:9. Doing that you will be able to see 4:3 content on the same height but not the same width. You will have vertical black bars on each side. The reason you should take as primary screen 16:9 format is that you lose less active surface when viewing 4:3 material. If you start with 4:3 screen, your 16:9 frame will be quite small.

Thank you! That does make sense. Does it matter if my projector is native 4:3? I have an older Epson s4 that I picked up.

What type of content are you planning to view on a 4:3 native projector? The vast majority of films are 2,35:1 or 1,85:1...

That's a good question... old VHS movies?
