Re: Headphone Roundup - Overview, Methodologies, and Scorecard

I like it. Maybe I can get Sonnie to foot the bill for renting Fritz and a private plane for a week of extensive headphone testing for HTS. Might as well go somewhere interesting while we're at it, Jamaica, Hawaii, make it all worth the time. How could he say no?

Maybe you could get some Neumann microphones and build your own Sonnie test dummy head? Place "Sonnie" in to one of those old anechoic dot matrix printer cases you'd see in offices back in the 80-90s that was used to preserve sanity. Re-purposed, one of those sound deadening cases would make a great platform for isolation testing of headphones. I'm willing to bet they sell for cheap on ebay.

Alternativly, I kind of dig what this guy on youtube does: places a high quality mic between the cans and lets you hear various headphones for your self.

Velodyne headphone

frequency response for the Velodyne seems horrible and look ovepriced, high frequency response is ridiculous.

I really like Velodyne (I owned a DD-15), but I think they should stay out of the headphone marke and stick to subwoofers.

Re: Headphone Roundup - Overview, Methodologies, and Scorecard

A good start of creating a list and have a listen as well.

Listening to a lot of different headphones can also be done here (at Sonic Sense):

Of course all 'listen to headphones' sites and measurement sites all fall or stand with their (measurement) mic and setup as well as applied compensations where needed.

A new site evaluating headphones and doing a good job IMO is Rtings:

And then there is this Russian site. It uses too much smoothing and correction around 3kHz is slightly off IMO but is good for evaluating tonal balance:

Also I have quite a few interesting headphone measurements myself:
