Mirage Nano Center Speaker

Hello all, I have a Mirage center speaker whose main driver simply stopped working. The tweeter still functions.

I called Klipsch support and the tech was more interested in condescendingly explaining how the Reference II series was replaced by the Reference Premier and seemed to find my questions about my system and then the differences between the Icon series and the Reference II to be old news and not worth his time. Man, I wanted to run to Hsu so fast. Okay enough ranting.

The question is, does anyone have a suggestion as to what the malfunction may be? I took the speaker apart and found no visual indication of the electronics burning out and the wires were all tightly clipped into the speaker.

Thank you!

Re: Mirage Nano Center Speaker

With a passive speaker there's really very little to it; you have drivers and a crossover, that's all. You can't really be certain about the state of electronics visually, so while there may not be any signs of burnt components that doesn't mean something isn't shorted nonetheless. That part is a bit more difficult to diagnose though.

Do you have a multimeter? If so disconnect the driver and measure continuity across the terminals. It should read between 4-8 ohms, depending upon the driver. Anything outside that probably means the voice coil is shot.
