I'm currently building a sealed sub for someone and thought I would share it with you guys and get a bit of a critique if needed. You'll have to excuse any pics of poor quality as I had an issue with the camera half way through the build and had to use my phone for some of them. Its almost complete now, so I'll post pics of the finished article soon.

Hope you enjoy and find it useful :T

Cheers

It is, they seem to be gaining a little popularity in the UK, probably due to a bit of attention myself on a couple others gave them. The first sub I built using these was pretty good for me so Ive stuck with them.

I do have ideas on trying some other drivers out at some point, but not for a little while yet.

Its the X model.
Looks really good mate. Very impressed. Be interesting what other drivers you have in mind and what type of sub, i.e: sealed, ported etc.....

I have been very interested in Mark Seatons new Terraform XL which has the two 15" subs and 2 18" PR's and a big slot port. Its the idea I find very intersting.

cheers

Thats got to be one of a design headache. It sounds more like he's trying to build 2 subs in one to get a couple different tunes and get a better response with more output. See what the reviews are like when it lands.

I want to try a couple ported designs, partly just to be thorough. I like the look of the Soundsplinter divers, and I also fancy something daft just for fun, but its a long shot if that'll every happen. I also want to try a sealed twin driver cylinder sub to see how that works as a design.

That actually makes more sense, and had I paid attention to what Ricci has said about it being a variation on a 6th order Bandpass design the penny would have dropped. Its a design Bose use a lot with small 6" drivers (I think they claim to have invented it) and for what they are the results are decent.

I can only expect doing it on this scale would be nothing short of spectacular. If I'm not mistaken Bose also follow this design on a larger scale, and they seem to impress people. I would expect Mark Seaton to offer much better VFM and results.

Just model a 6th order design in WinISD to get an idea of how it works. The hard bit would be swapping your ports for pr's, which you would almost certainly need to do. If you could do it with just ports you'll make the project cheaper, but I'm not entirely sure why you would want to do this.

I get the feeling part of the reason Bose use this design is to employ a low pass filter into the design of the sub itself and allow the sub to integrate with their sats better. The Bose design philosophy is one on its own. I'm not sure why Mark has chosen that design, although Bose reckon any distortion from the drivers is all caught inside the chambers inside the cabinet leading to a cleaner sound. I can only assume that is the part Mark is interested in. He's obviously chasing max spl, max depth and max clean signal.

Dan,

Bose uses an 8th order BP. :T That's their patented acoustimass dealio. Basically take the 6th order BP and where you have the 2 ports or PR's, one from each chamber, instead of hitting the outside world they vent into a 3rd chamber, which is itself tuned with PR's or ports. There are 2 freeware programs that I know of that will model these (8th order). They are very tricky though. WinISD can do 6th order.

A while ago when I was 16 I built a replica Bose Acoustimass bass module with two 6 1/2" subwoofers. When I built it I left one side wall re mountable to So I could tune the chambers by moving the two baffles in it. As a result I got a pretty good sounding sub with higher output. Bose speakers seem to me a bit cheap for what you pay for them. But at the same time they sound pretty good too. I am still up in the air with them. The first set of pix is the style I replicated.

Not sure what design you are targeting So I found some pix for you this is there old Style bass module.

And this is there newer bass module. I think you were referring to the first one.

I'm thinking if your going to build a box with 2 15"s like that its going to be Crazy Awesome.

I actually owned one of the older style bass modules with a lifestyle system. The results were very good given the size of drivers they used, but not when compared with a true sub woofer. I really do wander what a design using proper sub bass drivers would sound like. Boss subs (in commercial use) are very large indeed, which I think is probably a good guide as to how a DIY effort would end up.

yeah compared to a real subwoofer there is no comparison. I talked to bose once and they would never call there's a subwoofer. So at least there being honest. One guy even told me the frequencies produced from there cubes can make you feel fatigued? He worked at best buy, Not so sure if that's true but sounded kinda funny.

I think Bose instruct their reps on this, as I've noticed it from every Bose dealer. The small cubes are IMO more like tweeters that go lower than normal. With a Bose system you basically get a system of 5 speakers with the bass driver removed, and a pseudo mid tweeter combined into one for minimisation. Then a mid/bass driver placed inside a cabinet of unusual design so it goes pretty low and you only need one.

Personally, I think they ask a bit much of the systems for them to be any more of a lifestyle choice, but then thats exactly where they aim their product. I dont think Bose products are bad, I just think they are for people that dont really get overly critical about their systems, and can afford the premium.

I had he single cubes and sub in my bedroom with a cheap sony receiver. I think it was the Acoustimass 6.

I have to say it was pretty awful to say the least. I personally don't like the sound of bose. My friend had one of the lifestyle systems and while the surround effects were great the bass from the module wasn't. And when you think how much they bang them out for. Ouch! The design of it looks pretty good and something like that with 2 15's would I am sure sound awesome.

And here is the final completed sub, one AV15-X DF 500, catchy model number I think :D. All I need to do now is test it and delivery it to its new owner tomorrow.
