Hello everyone, I'm just looking to get a little feedback from anyone who has a 135" 16:9 screen regarding seating distance/immersion. I'll finally be able to start framing my dedicated HT soon and I have a 135" elite screen but I'm unsure exactly how large I would like the room to be. My raw space is 14Wx28Dx7H but I don't believe I'll keep it the full 28' due to the low ceiling restricting high risers.

I watch solely blu ray content and have an Epson 8350. All comments are welcome.

I have a 134" Jamestown screen and we sit about 12' from the screen. We used to have a Epson 1080, but now we have a BenQ 1070... The picture looks great after we dialed the settings down. We have a pretty much light controlled room but I use it for the internet too. When I have the internet on I have the lights on and the picture still looks good.

The CarltonBale chart puts the optimum distance for 1080 (HD) at about 17 feet for that size (135") screen. At 12 feet, you really should be into UHD land, and while HD still gives a good picture, one might be able to see some pixel structure if they have good eyesight.

I have cousins whom I'm not all that fond of going to the theater with because when we get there, they invariably head for the front row (and they outnumber me so what can I say). My neck can't take that very well anymore, and I feel like I'm looking up the actors' noses. Not so bad in a home theater situation because while close, you're more straight-on, but I'm more of a farther-away sort in my seating preference.

Yeah me too, when I go to the show (which will be never once my theater is done) I always take the back row. I don't need to be on top of the screen to feel immersed but I don't want to have to squint either. That's why I went with the biggest screen I could fit in my space but I'm not sure where I want to be sitting since I've never had anything larger than a 63" TV in my home.

If it is too big you can always crop it with curtains... My wife thought 134" was going to be too big and she loves it. She likes to go to the middle or farther back in the theater too.

I'm not worried about it being too large, I just don't want to build the room too small so I'm limited to how far back I can go. Just wondered where most sat while watching this size screen. I can't wait to try it though!

I think 12' gives me about a middle of the theater or farther back view... I am planning on going 150-170" (2.35:1) when we do our garage HT. In our garage we will have a front row around 12' and the back row about 15-16' from the screen. I like to have the screen envelop my view without having to turn it so see the whole picture. Hopefully the garage setup will do thet better than my current setup.

We are going to make the screen the same size as the 2 car garage door... I can't wait either.

You will find that a 135" screen at 12 feet is going to be a bit to large to fill your field of vision and you will find that you will be turning your head to catch everything and that's not ideal or relaxing. I know Ellisr63 has that size but it's not the norm. I have a 120" 2:35,1 screen and I sit at 12 ft and it's perfect. Plus I have two rows and everyone who comes and sits in the back row that's at 16 ft loves it also.

Oh I have no plans of making my MLP at 12'. I thought that would be way too close with this size screen but if some like it that way I won't say anything bad about it. If anything, I can move forward if I find that the screen is getting too small once I'm accustomed to it ha. But initially I'm thinking of 15-17' should work nicely. I'd love to have a 2:35.1 screen but going anamorphic is a bit costly for me right now so I settled for the large 16:9 which isn't too bad considering I do like to watch TV shows on Blu-ray so that screen will look great.

I made an error... My head is 14' from the 134" screen. My Klipsch LaScalas are on each side of the screen and they are in my vision at all times (inside of my glasses area) without moving my eyes at all.

I found my ideal spot at about 14' from a 140" screen (16:9). Just about fills my FOV completely but I do not have to turn my head to follow the action on screen.

Adding to that discussion, whatever position you choose to plant your base on :), you might want to leave a few feet of space behind you.... you know... to place your speakers for that ideal 7.1 sound... :)

I have a 106", and when I say it's small, people are surprised. I'm looking to go 135" myself, but will probably go with a 120". Just due to the size of the room, sitting distance (14') and speaker locations. I'd have ~14" on each side of the screen for speakers, and 27" below the screen for center channel placement.

I usually go as big as I can, but 135" is about the absolute maximum I can go in this room, and it'd take a few adjustments. I'd love to go 135", but I keep talking myself out of it....

So, with my projector (replacing the Panasonic AE3000-U with a Optoma HD131Xe this week due to power surge), 120" won't be bad. When I upgrade to UHD, I'll upgrade screen size.

If you have the space, and can work the speakers around (or AT screen), then I'd go 135". But, like others have mentioned - where do you sit at the theater? In the back? Then, sitting 12' away from a 135" screen might be too much. If you sit towards the middle or front, it might be perfect.

Thanks for the input everyone, I believe I will go as large as I can but I'm having a tough time determining exactly what that should be since I'm new to projection and throws and whatnot. I'm going to make an AT screen though so I can go really big and hide the center speaker.

If you are going with a AT screen... Why not make the screen the whole wall? If you do it this way you can mount your projector, and then make the picture whatever size you feel comfortable with. We are going with a Seymour AT screen that is 14' wide, which will leave me with just enough room on one side to have our rack (which will be behind black acoustic material). Once we setup the projector we will see what size we feel comfortable with and then mask to it. If down the road we get a better projector that we can go bigger with and enjoy the picture we don't have to buy another screen. I kick myself for not going with the screen wall the first time. :T

Ellis, that's exactly what I've done. Been a little while since I've been on my own thread ha but I ended up going with a 158" that takes up the entire wall. Well, floor to ceiling and about 16" on each side since I only have 7 foot ceilings. Ordered a piece of screen from Falcon that measures 140x80. Framing of the theater is complete, working on the wiring now but here are a couple shots I took just shooting the pj onto the concrete wall. Can't wait to finish it! Electrical should be done soon.

Do you have a build thread? I would love to see how it is coming along. What projector are you using? :T

I've been debating when to start a build thread because I know once I start one I may spend too much time on the forums updating it so I am thinking I'm going to just make a complete one showing start to finish once I'm done. Goal is to be done before a golf trip for the fourth of July but might be tight.

I'm using an Epson 8350, my first projector and first dedicated theater build. Very excited. I have so many movies I haven't yet seen because I wanted to see them in a real cinema setting. I have a temp setup in my living room which has a 63" Samsung plasma with 2 emp tek e55Ti towers in Phantom mode along with 2 SVS PB-2000s.

But to show you the screen wall I've built I'll post a pic. Hopefully it doesn't come through sideways, kinda annoying. The frame is literally the wall frame so it's very solid. Thought about clamping the screen up temporarily to see what it looks like but I don't have enough clamps and wouldn't get anything done if the screen is up ha.

Need to take better pics with stuff out of the way. Ugh they're sideways again. Will have to try from my computer. The second shot is looking in behind the false wall from the doorway I've built. Allows very easy access to the soundstage.

Your goal date is the same as mine! I hope to have mine up by the beginning of July (I doubt if it will be tuned yet though).

I wouldn't worry about watching the movies now as when you get the HT done you will want to watch them all over again to experience the larger screen. :T I have watched my movies over and over, over the years... Sometimes just because I got a new piece of equipment.

BTW: What is the car in your avitar?

If you go AT screen you can go bigger. :T
