Acoustic Elegance AV15 Small and ported

Hi Guys:

With the help of several of you I built a sealed 4.4 ^ foot box (and a 2.1^foot cabinet) with AE AV15D drivers, powered by a QSC RMX2450 (750x2 at 4 Ohms). I am very pleased, but have an itch to try a ported design.

Iíve just enough "understanding" of WinISD to think I have an idea; though I'm willing to drop those ideas, too. I would love some feedback/guidance in what Iím designing here.

Iím going to tune to the FS of the driver ~22Hz in a 2.5^ foot cabinet, donít think Iíll miss bass below that, but if I do, thatíll be my next project!

I am assuming a larger port for a subwoofer will be better than a smaller port. Parts Express offers 4" and 6" ports. I modeled a 6" port in WinISD, and it suggests a 56.64" length port! I am guessing that means there will be a substantial increase in the external volume to maintain the internal unoccupied volume.

I will use Minidsp to create a high pass filter at 17 Hz to avoid over excursion at 16Hz.

Port speed seems to be below 21m/s and I believe/hope that avoids some or most port noise.

Is port length of 56" accomplished by lots of elbows? If PE's ports are 10" long, can I just attach the same
diameter abs from Home Depot to the prescribed length? Do those elbows need to be ďbuttressed?

Do my numbers look OK, here? Staying smaller is desirable, but if I need to make the cabinet a bit bigger, I'm open to entertaining that suggestion, too.

In advance,
thanks,
Larry

Re: Acoustic Elegance AV15 Small and ported

The port is too long causing the first port resonance to be too low at 119 hz. 3.5 cu.ft tuned to 22 hz with a a pair of 4 inch flared ports would be a better combination in my opinion.

Re: Acoustic Elegance AV15 Small and ported

I'm finally going to act on Mike's suggestion to go with two four inch flared ports, 36.2" long (per WinISD) and have a few questions:

1) Does the 36.2" length mean two 18.1" ports, or are both ports 36.2" long?
2) My design won't have a 36" internal length. I'm assuming I can use elbow joints to create the desired of space?
3) Using Mikeís suggestion, WinISD suggests a 36.2" length. Iím assuming hitting that length precisely is important, how do I measure for the elbow in the port?
4) It seems like a 36" port should be supported internally, any reasonably secure method should be ok?
5) Do dimpled ports make a difference? Or are the regular ports fine?

In advance, thanks again for all of your generosity.
