Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

This is my first attempt at building a sonotube sub. Did research and got the programs and this is what I came up with. My Original design is getting changed. Instead of a 3" port I'll be using a 4" port and the cosmetics are going to be different. I just don't want to re-draw the design lol. Here are a few pictures.

Nice progress so far, what are you gonna power them with?
I spy a ton of other drivers in the background, more speakers to come?

I take it you used an elbow for the port to make the port fit, correct?

BuddahX 11-09-10 02:31 PM

Re: 3.0 CuFt. 18hz Sonotube sub build x2

I was going too but decided to stick with a 3" port. Then I wont have to worry about an elbow. I think that's enough of a port and I'm using a flared port. ordering stuff from parts express Friday. Debating in raping the tubes in a black carpet like typical builds or go out of the norm and do stainless or powder coated aluminum.

I would have gone with the 4":whistling:

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

my parts are coming in Tuesday from Parts Express. I'm also waiting on a quote for two 16" dia. 1/4 thick glass for my top pieces. I will be covering the tube with metal and painting it. do something different. I'll have new pics up in a week or two.

What's the model number of the Peerless subs and what are you going to power them with?

BuddahX 11-26-10 03:39 PM

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

Peerless 830500 12" XLS Subwoofer and two Dayton SA240-B 240W. Have one gotta order another one. I don't need a ton of power sense I can't ever turn it up.

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

It's coming along. Did you remove the release film from the inside of the tube before you attached the end caps?

BuddahX 11-26-10 05:25 PM

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

these didn't have a film. They been sitting in the rafters at my work for a while. There's four left. Unless when the got that job that needed these they pulled off the film off of all of them I'm not too sure. or its still on it. I thoroughly cleaned the dust off with a 120 PSI air compressor and a brush and rag. Didn't notice a film of any kind. you got me all worried now lol.

BuddahX 11-26-10 05:32 PM

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

Think that's the film?? I didn't know they had a film. all the sonotube builds I watched I never herd about the film. if its in there think it will compromise anything?

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

It's hard to say by looking at the pics. Try and get under it with a sharp knife point, you'll know it's the release film if you can peel it off. The problem with the release film is most glues won't stick to it.

BuddahX 11-28-10 01:54 PM

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

Its not wanting to come off and the glue bond is good on the brace so Looks like im in luck. :) Went to my buddy's house used is router for top and bottom plates. wanted a good circle with a rounded edge. Parts come in tuesday... yay.

Looking good: can't wait to see the unique finish you're planning. If those are hollow tubes, you might try inserting some damping material inside as mine ring from time to time and I need to do something on my big sonosub. I'm thinking of using spray-foam or caulk.

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

Yea im going to put some acoustc foam in it. But after i paint it. Hopefully start painting this weekend.

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

well the stainless Idea is a no go.. To expensive lol. So I got a metal called Paintgrip. Its pretty much a baked on primer on a sheet of metal. Paints real nice. So I'm going to wrap the sonotube with it and will be a nice smooth finish. So the color scheme is going to be Satin black and polished Brass. Hope it turns out.

wanted more support so took out the metal pipe and put in wooden rod. the fostner bit was a bit larger than the pipe so it was a loose fit. so the wood dowels fit nice and snug.

I'm gong to be fiber glassing these Cone shaped Diverter that I will place right above the port. I'm thinking it will help with turbulence instead of hitting the flat top plate the air will hit the cone and disperse more smoothly from the top assembly.
http://i870.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/SDC11772.jpg
This is just the middle support base and the tip. I will be putting the cloth on tomorrow and fiber glassing this weekend.

Pretty creative stuff you've got going on. Never seen that paint grip sheet metal anywhere before: looks like a great substitute for your original idea.

I wanted to originally do carbon fiber then stainless, But don't have the money right now. but later I can cover the metal with it and it will be nice and smooth and round. Thank you for the comments.

Great look, how about your review!
I wonder if the dispersal cone changes the tuning for better or worse?
I may just follow in suit if you think this design was good, why the particular driver choice? Brand, price or research?

BuddahX 12-20-10 05:51 PM

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

These are my first Sonotube subs ever. I've done ported, vented, and sealed boxes. These thing's sound pretty amazing. I get a better sweet spot of bass more in the center of the room than previous boxes. I get good bass at lower volume and more windows shake in my room the previous sub boxes. As far as the cone goes. It appears more for looks than anything. I just saw something similar with Polk Audio's older series of speakers had a setup like that on there towers and bookshelf speakers and wanted to try it. I think my top plate is too far away from the port to really make a difference with or without the cone. As far as a driver pick I picked perless cause of price. But I'm going to be building custom 12" subwoofers with High roll Rubber Surround Carbon Fiber Honex cones, CF dustcaps, 12 spoke 12" baskets, soft spiders, TC9 motors, 3" voice coils. So the whole build will be from scratch. Not sure what to label type of driver now on the main name of the thread now... But hope that helps a little. I really like how they sound and the sweet spot of bass in the middle of the room. Used to having to go toward a corner of a room to get the bass lol. This is also my first setup with two subs. Normally used only one.

well decided that I don't really care for the cone look and the top assembly. So I had my friend make me two Round 1/4" pieces of glass I'm gong to use for the top plate. for now I finished both top and bottom pieces of brass trim. Now working on the logo. Think I'm going to call my builds Euphoria Technology, what you think?

Re: Sonotube sub build x2 18hz (Peerless)

thanx guy's. Yea I'll put up a list when I get a chance. working on Christmas projects (gifts) right now lol. But I'm pretty excited for these. They should be even more amazing when I build my two 12"s for these. ^_^. I got the glass today but my friend cut it the wrong size. so he's making me another set. So I'm thinking about using both on each tube. so on top there will be a 16" dia. piece of glass then a 1/2" spacer then a 18" dia piece of glass. I think it will look pretty cool.
