Re: Maelstrom-x 21" 15cu Sealed Build!

my wife and I were visiting our in laws in the chicago area, there is a theater I believe is in lake in the hills that has a great sound system.

We saw GI joe there and that was the only standard style theater I have ever been in that shook the ground. the opening scenes with the energy weapons had this low tactile vibe that was below what you were hearing and you could feel it in the concrete floor.

In the omaha area, actually across the river is an actual Imax that plays the block busters. If you can go to an Imax do it...its a great setup.
Their sound system is phenominal. I belive algonquin or elgin has a Imax thats attached to a regular theater that you could go to as well.

I have heard (rumors but from a friend I trust) that the Large Imax theaters they are building on the multiplexes...they are advertised as having 15,000 watts of power. Now that is RMS, the system will actually put out 30,000 watts during huge action scenes...but aparently Imax advertises it at 15K because they are affraid that people will say "30,000 watts...oh thats gonna be to loud" and go elsewere

that is a rumor I would believe though.

Imax is my bench mark...my goal for my eventual home theater.
I saw the dark knight at the one in the omaha area...there are alot of low brass horns used in the score for the movie. you could feel vibrations in the air from the resonance of the notes they were playing...like standing next to a horn player....that is my goal to reproduce that experience.

Back on topic...I like your setup. the sub stands out because its so big...but I like the full size speakers across the front and the divided equipment stands...I plan on doing something similar.

If I were to do it again though, I'd do a false wall and have the gear and speakers hidden behind cloth covered "doors" or velcro pull off sections of the false wall. And I'd have gone with an acoustically transparent screen and made that whole front wall dead. I still get a lot of front to back reflection due to the room being only 25'. I love my screen, and the sound is great, but I think both could be even better.

That's why we build v2.0, right?

I did go a little overboard on size, but that's just because I set myself some (arguably arbitrary) build parameters. Basically, I did everything on Prime Numbers (length, width, height, and bracing spacing) which in theory should help naturally damp resonations or at least keep them from being even order.
