Sub woofer behind screen

I'm putting my speakers behind my screen and want to know if I can put my sub woofer behind it as well?
The screen is a mesh and looking forward to hiding all of the speakers.

Thanks for the help.

Yes you can place your sub behind the screen. Bass frequencies are much harder to "hide." So if your regular L/R and others can go back there then your sub will be no problem.

Re: Sub woofer behind screen

melret, a few things to keep in mind if you are putting your sub behind your screen. You should still try to find the optimal location for it, if possible, rather than just plunking it down. If you have any flexibility in positioning (corner, mid-wall, etc.) it would probably pay off to test before designing. Also, if you're building ported, make sure the port isn't firing into the screen or you may get some movement. By the same logic, you wouldn't want the actual driver very close to the screen.

Re: Sub woofer behind screen

Thanks for the information. I have plenty of options. There is no limitations as to where it goes. When you say test it out, how do I do that? I can put it in front of the screen, I have lots of room but thought it would like better if it was behind like my speakers.

He probably means either listening to see which location is the best, or better yet, measure the sub's frequency response with a tool like REW, which is available here at HTS.

Many of our members do the "subwoofer crawl," which means putting the sub at the main listening position and then moving around the room until the sub sounds the best. Then put the sub there.

Measuring with software and a calibrated microphone is by far the best method, but finding the best location with the crawl will help a lot also.

Re: Sub woofer behind screen

^^ Yep, that's it! There are a bunch of things you can try, but the subwoofer crawl seems to be the easiest way to get a generally good result. You can experiment with the sub in different locations behind the screen too (L corner, 3/4 along wall, midpoint on wall, R corner, etc... I think there's a rule about not being equidistant between 2 walls, so 1/3 or 3/4 will probably give you better results).
