Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

In terms of sheer output, your results co-relate pretty well to what I expected and experienced..
Awesome job Ilkka. Kudos!

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

The method I described is pretty crude and needs to be refined. It was only to convey the idea so it will get you to think along those lines. I have some ideas on how we can refine it. We can discuss...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Man I am so happy to hear this . My ears and skin didn't lie :). Did you notice I said skin. Because these subs make you feel. Ilkka,
Thyl would sure be happy to hear this as he was the first...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Not a dumb question, since the PR was the first suspect. I video taped the excursions and it was the driver. I have never heard a PR bottom out and I think if it did, it would sound pretty different...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Neither do I. Do you have a HP filter? If so, to what is it calibrated to? If not, has your sub ever bottomed out and how hard have you pushed it?

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Hi Funky waves,
Can you post the exact time stamp on this movie? Is it DTS or DD track that you like?
There is a whole bunch of other movies that are potential candidates, for example, Happy feet,...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Ilkka,
This is awesome news! :yay:
While we wait for these much awaited results, I had some thoughts that I am sure you would have contemplated too. How about some measurement results with real...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

I don't think there is anything wrong with this driver either. Some WinISD models give some indication why a filter like I describe is needed. It performs according to spec and it performs awesome.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Something to keep in mind. A sweep is different from real world movies. Set the 2nd order HP filter to 13Hz, calibrate to 80dB reference at LP in a large room (6000 cu ft plus) and with a similar...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

All that I am saying is, start with 20Hz and then go lower. Proceed with caution. I have seen it happen and it is not pretty. 13Hz 2nd order BW? no I don't think so. Not with this design and tuning....

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Agreed, it is not everyday real world usage, but you will agree that some of us do crank it up at times, don't we. It doesn't take much power to bottom out this design below tuning. In terms of...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Thanks for the link Willy. I haven't been frequenting those forums as much as I used to, and I am back here only to see Ilkka's mesurements. You are right, I didn't post about problems with a setting...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Willy,
I don't recall that. If so, maybe I didn't update on forums. But as my memory recalls, anything below 20Hz 2nd order was unsafe. Can you point me where I said that so I can go and update.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

One more thing about these amps. The first time, I did not follow the instructions carefully. When you bridge them, the gain on one of the knobs should be zero. I don't know what difference it makes,...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

2000 grams is fine and they were designed to take up to 2500gms. Those PRs have very robust components. I would still keep it below 2000. So 16Hz is the sweet spot.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

2nd order BW at 16Hz is too low and others will disagree with all their energy. My experience with this design is that it should go no lower than 20Hz. 4th order L-R, at 16Hz should be ok, not a...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

16Hz sounds good. What HP filter do you plan to use? Those crowns look great. Did you get a chance to mod the fans?

Man I can't wait :daydream: to see the results.
I don't see T-nuts. Did you opt out of them or is this just a temp mount for the PRs? Those PRs look different from mine

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Lot of action in this thread. Bottomline, we have insufficient data now and a lot is left to speculation. It would make sense to wait until this driver is in a box so we know what happens when the...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

You may want to try in the plumbing section of your local hardware store as there is a better chance of finding such large washers or nuts.
Yes, the fan is obnoxiously loud and that was the first...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

I used to lift heavy weights and turning that thing off the cone requires some serious torque. :boxer:
How did you do it? It took me a few tries before I got the sucker off. I had to replace a cone...

Will your boxes be ready by the time they arrive? Approximately when are they expected to arrive at your door?
