Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

And I never disagreed with you there. :whistling: I too think he should be able to use maybe a 13Hz 2nd order BW, at least judging from the simulations.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

I definitely understand where you are coming from. But that scenario and Jai's situation really can't be compared directly.

But there is no need for speculation when Ilkka himself will be fully...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Lets be real though, you're talking about purposefully playing them +6dB hot and cranking them up. That isn't a real world scenario.

Well there were some other things going with Jai's setup...

I don't recall you ever having a problem with the SSF set to 15Hz. I just thought you were afraid of potential problems at that...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Jai - 2nd order BW @ 16Hz isn't too low. Even when you had your Rane set at 15Hz (with your 5400s tuned to 15Hz) you admitted you were a-ok.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

IIRC, Ilkka wants it set up to where he can (if he needs to or chooses to) put an amp on each voice coil. You know, to make sure the 5400 gets all the power it needs.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Well do remember that the Tumult Ilkka tested was a Mk1. The Mk2 had at least this change:

"New for the Mark II design is an integrated shorting ring, lowering inductance even further and...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Someone just needs to send an Ava to (npdang (http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/member.php?u=1)) for a Klippel. Its long overdue. Seems like more than a few people would be willing to chip in too.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Yeah, I understand what you're saying.

But the fact that those measurements I linked to are only of the sub driver doesn't negate them, if anything they are more useful. Their deficiencies can't...

Oh but it does show up in a measurement. Here are two near field measurements. One of an AVA15 and the other of the 390. The difference is obvious.

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

You reckon its significantly cleaner in the upper frequencies than the SDX?

I dunno...I'd actually say the those complaining of a lack of "punch" in the upper frequencies are merely complaining...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

I don't think it is excessive. The 5400 effectively had lower THD at the 105dB sweep than the SDX had at the 90dB sweep. We'll certainly know more after the next outdoors session. That should be a...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

For much of the short lifespan the 5400 had, it wasn't even in stock. When it was first released, it had the regular Alu cone (shortly). Thats no good. Then they switched to Ti (clear coat), but...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

I agree that a FR/THD like Ilkka has done here would've done a whole lot as far as "selling" the 5400.

But I think you're forgetting that TC Sounds had no real problem selling them. They...

Re: LMS-5400 / RL-p18" buy-in

Wow, wow, wow....wow. I mean...I had my suspicions concerning the LMS, but I honestly didn't think it'd test that well. And just thing, just months ago an 18" was "only" $875 shipped.

Re: LMS-5400 buy-in... Ilkka test Thread!

The 5400 doesn't need 7.5ft^3 for a nice low natural Q.
