I had a listen to your link ... but , unfortunately didn't see a good shot of how the gain structure was setup in the ITB example ... though did notice his track faders were fairly...

I noticed the difference in headroom ... There were some differences in master fader setting to achieve the same output .... duhhh ????

I have also done a similar subjective test of entry level DAWs ... Same tracks/equipment .. and also noted sonic differences ... The test included Cubase , ProTools , Sonar ,...

I .... like all of us .... would really like a hybrid approach ... and have the choice of the best of both worlds ... but that's an expensive proposition ....

Some comments on the K system ... Firstly ... contrary to some of the thinking here ... it's not about headroom ... it's about crest factor ... that is .. difference between average RMS...

I'd begin by feeding your room dimensions through a program like ModeCalc , to see if you can figure what boundary dimension is causing your spectral 'hump' ... Even better , go here...

I'm hoping this explanation helps ...
Membrane bass traps , as per Ethan , rely on the front membrane vibrating , and that vibration being damped in the sealed airgap behind it .......
