Re: source material to evaluate different types of surrounds

I would suggest that if you have to specifically select a movie to support your preference that perhaps the preference is not well founded.

Systems are implemented to 'accurately' reproduce the...

Re: Example of full range with miniDSP

I am curious.

EQ is not effective in mitigating non-minimum phase speaker room interaction, and that is exactly what the direct-reflecting model attempts to maximize.

So how are you determining...

Re: Sound resonances (modal) as electricity source?

The recovered energy wouldn't even come close to equaling the energy necessary to stimulate the behavior!

They would do better to harness the mechanical energy of each body within the space used...

Re: Calibraion problems

Since no one seems to be touching this...

You need to provide just a little bit more configuration information!

It reads as if all is configured properly and then, for 'no apparent reason', the...

Re: A decent control room in a small unsymmetrical living room?

For the ETC we measure each source INDIVIDUALLY as earlier stated.
Otherwise we have two sources whose signals arrive at differencing times.

Generally, measurements are made at the same precise...

Re: Mic pre-amp with balanced inputs and outputs

I would not recommend that model, although it would be fine for recording (where mics and the signal chain are effectively used as filters...) You do not want a pre-amp that colors the output, even...

Re: A decent control room in a small unsymmetrical living room?

Just a few comments...

It is rather easy to see the early grunge aggravated by the speaker mount and the base as well as what is most likely the worksurface.

The asymmetry of the room topology...

Re: A decent control room in a small unsymmetrical living room?

Not sure what to tell you, as you state constraints and then want suggestions.

Modal behavior and symmetry are important!

The frequency response measurements simply confirm that you have...

Re: Using REW to set up a PA system

Especially in PA systems with spaced sources (as opposed to more properly inverting, stacking and splaying the units in one stack to minimize comb filtering and to enable appropriate horizontal...

Re: ECM8000 + xlr to usb adapter

I apologize for appearing to be 'argumentative', but EQ CANNOT compensate for "room " problems dominated by the interaction of out of phase specular signals above ~250 Hz. It use is limited to the...

Re: Acoustics Treatment Materials

No. It is orchard bird netting... a more open mess plastic bird netting used to cover fruit trees and keep the birds out in order to protect the fruit.

It is sort of like a smaller version of...

Re: Acoustics Treatment Materials

An easy solution to supporting the material is to use cheap plastic orchard bird netting (available at the WalMart garden center) to help support the material - Just staple it to the frame.

Re: I'm back but confused, again!

Would not the stereo mode send the signal to BOTH front left and right speakers, thus feeding two sources?
Is the other speaker disconnected?

Again, my preferred method is to simply manually...

Re: DIY monitor isolation mounts

Use Sorbothane.

Their website has much good (and advanced) design resources and you can source sheets of the material sufficient to solve the mounting issues (using 3 pieces per speaker) for your...

Re: First Run with REW... Please be gentle :)

The fact is that most here start and end with a smoothed frequency response with a world view that ends at ~200 Hz and EQ. And as such they have no use for the file which allows one to delve into the...

Re: I'm back but confused, again!

Is this a display of two sources played simultaneously?

I hope so! Otherwise you have some real issues with a VERY early indirect signal exhibiting higher gain than the direct signal!!

And if...

Re: ECM8000 + xlr to usb adapter

I apologize for mentioning this, but there are a few important distinctions that are being glossed over here.

One is the "equalization of the speaker".

Ignoring crossover issues, a speaker's...

Re: External sweep with REW

Simply make a full range sweep of the system with REW!

The filters determined in that section of the program have nothing to do with the measurement portion of the program!

Re: Any favorite full-range EQ recommendations?

Multiple problems in the basic assumption.

First, 1/3 octave EQ is NOT sufficiently precise for EQing 'environmentally related speaker-boundary issues.

Secondly, except in very limited cases...

Re: Feature request for Decay / Waterfall / Spectrogram views

The problem is further compounded by the fact that RTXX calculations are not appropriate for small acoustical spaces that do not exhibit statistically homogenous soundfields!

In other words, RTXX...
