But his room isn't large enough to produce a reflection of 30 seconds. Sound travels ~1100 feet/second, so his room would produce reflections inside the ears gate time of ~50msecs and should not be...

I would think that if we are EQ'ing at our listening / measurement position, and the gating of the impulse response is set to the point where the signal enters the noise, that all reflections...

It's not possible with your scenario.

Think of it another way.

We decide we want to isolate the room effect only.

(Not that you would be able to do it), but let's suppose we do it your way...

You're missing the point somewhat. Let's look at it another way, so I can illustrate the folly of including your system equipment in a calibration file.
