Crown XLS vs EP4000

Quick question, I currently have 2 EP4000 which would drive 4 SI 18" (D2 wired for 4ohm) in 24" sealed boxes. One sub per channel.

I got the Class D bug and picked up some XLS 1000 and 2000 to drive my speakers.

I was thinking of replacing the EP4000 with some XLS amps.

How much power would my subs actually need?

Crown XLS:
Specifications
Stereo
Model 4-ohm
1000 350W
1500 525W
2000 650W
2500 775W

Bridged:
Model 4-ohm
1000 1,100W
1500 1,550W
2000 2,100W
2500 2,400W

Would I see any difference in power consumption? I'm assuming the Class D amps would be more energy efficient..that's the end goal really.

Re: Crown XLS vs EP4000

I own/have owned Crown XLS and EP4000.

IMO

Efficiency= Crown, quieter=Crown, power=depends which model of Crown, bang for buck=probably ep4000

Realistically you could get by with either the XLS 1500 or 2000 powering your subs. I think the 1000 would lack sufficient power and the 2500 might be a smidge too much.

Re: Crown XLS vs EP4000

don't forget that those power ratings on the EP4000/EP2500 are completely over stated. they really only put out about 600-700 watts of true power per channel into 4 ohms

Exactly what i was thinking. Still debating if I should go through the hassles of getting rid of my EP4000. I absolutely love the XLS series.

Re: Crown XLS vs EP4000

Crown makes great amps. They tend to be quiet and exhibit superior sound quality. However with that being said I feel they give you low power at their respective price points. I would never use anything lower than a Crown XTI 4000 or Crown XLS 2500. And both of those amps were weaker than the Inuke 6000 I use now which is much lower price.

Re: Crown XLS vs EP4000

Digging this one up from the grave but it's time for me to sell some amps.

Subs are Dual 2 Ohm wired for 4Ohm

Currently running 2x EP4000 1 sub per channel.

I also have 2x Crown XLS1000 and 1 Crown XLS2000

With the XLS1000 it would be in Bridge Mode: 1 sub per AMP at 1100 watts, then the XLS2000 would be in stereo, one sub per channel at 650w per channel.

Is 1100 watts too much for that woofer/box combo?
Is 650 enough for that woofer/ box combo?

I don't want to hurt the subs.

1100 is fine. A lot of people run these in that range
