should I connect these sub in parallel or in series?

Hi, I have a bluray samsung home theater system which I would like to connect two sub in parallel. The home theater sub out is rated at 3ohm 175 RMS. The subwoofers I want to connect are 6ohm and 135RMS. Could I connect them in parallel in order to drop the inpendance to 3ohm? Or connect them in series?

Thanks

In parallel, you'll end up with a 3Ω load... but it is possible that the amp channel, only providing 175W RMS, might not be enough to drive both subs. You'll nominally have a total power handling of 270W (135x2). It could be that you drive the amp to the point of clipping, which can ultimately damage the speakers.

In series, you'll have a total load of 12Ω. In this case, you'll draw much less current from the amp. This will result in less power being delivered (and therefore lower output), but you reduce the chance of damaging components almost to zero.

I'd try series first, and see if it's enough to provide the bass response you want. If it isn't, parallel is still safe, as long as you're cautious with the volume. If your subs start to sound funny, turn them down. (But as a general rule, distortion can do damage long before it's audible)

I can promise you that that Samsung system will not put out any where near 175w to the sub. Those systems are notorious for over rating output. Try if you like but dont expect much volume before distortion
