  1. Sprayed car paint questions

    DIY Screen Development and Testing
Well I don't know who Ron is but... :sarcastic: I would not even consider getting a commercial screen paint. They are overpriced and you can do better with DIY mixes I think. If you want a really big screen and have total light control (walls and ceiling dark) then white may be the way to go...

    DIY Screen Development and Testing
Hi Car Painter. I guess using pro car spraying gear takes this beyond standard DIY but this sounds very interesting. As Harpmaker says, neutrality is the key and you really need some way to measure this (i.e. not just by eye) fortunately there may be some people around somewhere who could...

    Excellent stuff Mech!
  4. screen gain recomendaton for AE4000U

    General Screen Discussion
While I would not recommend a high gain screen I would not go for a white screen either. After watching my 4000 on white for a couple of months now I would only recommend a grey screen. The projector is plenty bright enough to cope with an N8.5 or darker. Its all a matter of taste of course.
  5. The Placebo Effect

    DIY Screens
Are you suggesting the laws of physics actually apply to DIY screen paints?
  6. The Placebo Effect

    DIY Screens
Of course there is away to overcome the film thickness problem. If the film thickness could be completely randomised on a very small scale then the overall effect would be the same as having a uniform film thickness because the average would win out when perceived by the eye. To achieve this...
  7. The Placebo Effect

On the subject of mirrors... Paint must be thick enough for its "true" colour to be seen. Pigments vary in their translucency. If we have a hypothetical case with three pigments each absorbing red blue or green (or their theoretical wavebands) and say, the green absorbing pigment is less...
  8. Inverted (Negative) Images and Uniformity

    General Screen Discussion
Actually, Yes. I am on the verge of producing a mix that will blow all those others away! Unfortunately it requires that a tincture of wolfsbane be added under the light of a full moon and this must be stirred counterclockwise by a flame haired maiden. They are kinda rare in my part of town... :D
  9. HTS-X3 & HTS-X4 - experimental N9 reflective screen mixes.

    DIY Screen Development and Testing
The black I'm using is this one. RGB is 54 53 53. I don't ever intend to use this in a real screen paint. I just want to make a non-reflective matt paint to compare with HTS-X mixes and assess the effectiveness of the mica. I will send samples to both you and Mech soon!

Re: HTS-X3 - an experimental N9 reflective screen mix. I managed to get a few tubes at a local hardware store today (white, silver and grey). 75ml is all they stock and quite expensive so I will get some more online. One website has 946 ml of white for NZ$28 but the silver is 118ml/$5.60. I'll...

Re: HTS-X3 - an experimental N9 reflective screen mix. The brochure lists hue, value and chroma numbers so I assumed this was the Munsell system. If so 9.39 is the value for Titanium White. Does seem a bit low though. A 2:1 mix would have 66% of the reflective particles of a 1:1 mix. I...

    DIY Screen Development and Testing
Re: HTS-X3 - an experimental N9 reflective screen mix. I will try to get these tomorrow! Initially I will start small but have you any idea how much would be required to paint say a 100" screen? I looked at this on the Liquitex website. The pigments listed are just TiO2 and TiO2 coated...

I have seen the BASICS range here so I would be very interested in trying this out. I have a range of mixes that I'm testing now, 2 lightened BW, Straight BW and even a darkened BW. Also have some N8.4 Grey (212 212 212) in eggshell (lowest sheen they had) and mixes of Dulux Vivid white with...

Liquitex is available in NZ! As I'm making a double sided screen I have two choices to make. Currently I'm experimenting with Black Widow for the "dark side". The "light side" will either be an N8.5-9 neutral grey, a lightened BW mix or an NZ C&S if I can get it right!

    DIY Screen Development and Testing
No worries, I have seen a few metallic art paints for sale but have no way of knowing if they contain mica or metal flakes etc. I really appreciate the time you guys spend doing this. An odd hobby but strangely alluring! I am a development scientist and this stuff appeals to me. Just bought...

    Home Theater Projectors
I would have thought that an extra $896.00 is a small price to pay for the privilege of living your side of the border :heehee: I just paid NZ$ 3,999 which equates to around US$ 2,880 (depending on the exchange rate yo-yo). I got a free bulb with that though. Paradise has its drawbacks I suppose!

Hi Fellas, I have a few questions from New Zealand regarding BW, is this the correct place to post them? I am planning to paint my screen by the end of the week (although its quite warm and very humid here right now). Anyway, I am hoping to buy the Dulux Half Ellen this weekend (already have...
