IB - Infinite Baffle Subwoofer Build Projects
Nice...I got four of my 18's running before leaving for the Stewart and Colbert Rally, but not the full 8. Barely had time to make 'em thump once or twice before leaving.

I'm doing something somewhat similar and had a question. I'm doing 8 18" IB3's from Ficar as well, in a dual manifold arrangement, four per manifold, all opposed to cancel vibes, venting into the attic. I just got my 8 drivers in today. All of the driver's magnets are glued on with...

I'm on the fence on picking amplifiers. I've decided to go with 4ohm instead of 2ohm drivers, and use 4 amplifiers (one per pair of drivers) . Folks seem to like the EP4000, but I"m concerned with it's quality level and some reports of issues with them I've been reading about. The QSC QX5...

I spent more time up there today and there's exactly one place on either side of the structure where we can do this and it'll be limited to 21.5" wide. Which means the inside will be 18.5" wide. Which means we'll have a cross sectional area of about 342 in^2, and if I go by the sum of the Sd...

Box will be stronger...also easier to deal with....my only concern is the opening. About 22" square, for four 18" fairly decent excursion drivers. That seems a bit on the small side to be blowin' through?

Ah...sure....can't imagine it'd be too amazing though; IB's are fairly easy to build. And fairly cheap...8 of those 18's and a coupla decent amps to drive them will cost less than one of my surround speakers. Outta move some air though. Do ya'll IB folks have issues with sealing the juncture...

Sold...I like it. Those Fi car audio 18" IB3 drivers...they're only $220? I can get four of those for less than what one LMS Ultra costs. I'll look into doing 8 of them; four per side on either side of the screen setup on the wall up high. That'll help with room modes too. Just gotta crawl...

Hmm.....that might be an option. Can you really get the spl with those? With an IB you want a driver with a fairly stiff suspension, right? What's the current king of drivers for IB's? That room is a closet that eventually goes through a bathroom and then a bedroom and opens into the same...

If the size of the driver is not far off from the size of the tube, then yes, the port comes out the other end if you're doing ported. That's part of why I was thinking two drivers sealed.....none of the group delay issues, not as much issue with unloading under the tuning frequency (blew my...

A tube, 55" long, 24" diameter, take out .2 cu ft for the driver...bit over 14cuft for each driver, which is in line with the mal x recommendations.

Either way I can do a baffle that covers the opening, and though I can get a bit more volume, they're a pain in the butt to build, they're heavy, and they're much more likely to generate their own resonance. I like cylinders; they're elegant. All you'll see is the two drivers in one baffle...

Current setup....room is open to about 2500sqft of floor plan on two levels. Big volume to fill. System is currently 3 Adam Audio S3X-H's across the front, and two S3X-V's on the walls. Eventually 4 more S3X-V's will be added; two to the rear wall and two either front high or front wide (side...

Actually, I was asking how LOW you run them...what crossover freq you choose on the bottom end. (I do that all the time...read something quickly and miss a word that turns out to be key). I'm looking to crossover much lower than 700, if possible. And what kind of output levels are you getting...

I'm makin' slow but steady progress. Been researching drivers till my eyes have poppped out. I've also been looking at some different cad packages; it looks like Soundeasy is worth the buy, but folks have complained of it's non linear approach. However, it does integrate with the DCX well...

I think you're dead on with your assessment. You're in a unique position though, with the comfort level of designing your own setup, and if you come up with something good you can contribute to the other folks that are willing to melt some solder but aren't comfortable with the design process...

Don't worry about the driver arrangement in the drawing; it was something created in about 10 minutes to give a general idea of the enclosure and a possible option, and to help you understand that a 6 foot tall tower of drivers won't fit here. Dual 8's, a 5" mid 'n a tweet under 3" for outer...

I think the other aspect is folks can find tons of material on passive designs from those in the know and basically ride their shoulders, whereas there's nowhere as much as on designs using active crossovers and that's intimidating. It's new (well, not really) and it's not readily apparent how...

Sorry, I thought it was obvious; I meant 1 meter away, and full frequency of course. The one meter measurement is the only one that gets published with any consistancy; it would be a bit hard for manufacturers or other DIY'ers to publish numbers of spl levels experienced in my Lazyboy, and I...

Ah, I'm glad you brought that up, though I think you might be looking at his example of a circular baffle, where right now this has no baffle other than the edge of the driver itself. I can emulate the spherical transition pretty easily with this, without changing the enclosure design at all...

Here's some shots of the room. Don't mind the mess; all the electronics just got relocated and the new PJ went in. Most of the electronics will be housed in the basement, so amps with fans on them are no worries. You can see part of the reason I need some oomph...it's a huge area to fill, and...
