Here are the schematics of the old analog Radio Shack SPL meter (33-2050) and the newer digital readout meter (33-2055). They both show woefully inadequate coupling capacitors. Upping these should help the performance of this meter by an order of magnitude.

So I personally saw this coming after they pulled out of Canada several years ago. Radio Shack has filed for chapter 11 Story here When I was younger they were the place to go to get the odd parts and gadgets for audio.
