i am moving into a bigger house and want to get a sub, i plan on getting a ep4000 and either 1 Maelstrom-18 18 or 2 IXL-18.2.2 i would like to use a sealed box with 2 passive radiators. the Maelstrom-18 may end up slightly less expensive.

the box shown is 13.4 cubic feet and would have 1200g on the passive radiator. currently figured out for the IXL-18.2.2

this will be 50% music and 50%ht

Re: 2 mach5 IXL-18.2.2 or 1 Maelstrom-18?

the ones from mach5, if i went with the single maelstrom i would use their pr's and maybe a different weight.

is there a better reasonably priced pr that i should look into?

the cabinet is 36 x 36 if i figure a 8inch port it says it needs to be 41.5 inches long

also pr's look cool and my wife's cat wont climb into it.

Re: 2 mach5 IXL-18.2.2 or 1 Maelstrom-18?

ordered a ep4000 today. looking into porting the box, the pr's will add 4-500$ to the cost i am thinking i may be better off to draw up a ported sub

also can you just spray paint over the cheesy logos on the mach 5 subs with black spray paint? i would i be better off ordering new dust caps?

how well does slot porting work? will the 90deg bend in the port make noise?

Painting the caps wouldn't be a problem. Slot ports are fine as long as they're done right, as in big enough surface area. The 90 degree bend can be angled to 45 degrees or rounded over on the inside and outside edge of the bend. Will you be building 2 of these?

can you explain the 4" away from the back wall? i thought it needed to be 4" away from the top wall or the divider.

Re: 2 mach5 IXL-18.2.2 or 1 Maelstrom-18?

i got it up to 11 1/4 cubic feet but the tune is 17hz

if i go with 3 ports i can get the tune lower but the port velocity goes to high. whats more important the velocity or the 1st resonance frequency?

Optimally they should be 4" away from any wall.

In 11.25 cu.ft tuned to 17 hz, three 4" flared ports will be fine if you use a high pass filter at 15 hz. The maximum air speed would be under 27 m/s. Then cheapest solution would be the Reckhorn B1 from CSS. It can also boost the input voltage if your reciver doesn't have enough output to power the EP4000.

OK 3 ports

now the box is 12.1 cubic feet and the ports are 27.04" long measured in the middle of the radius, this now shows a 16.57hz tune. box is the same size externally just shorter ports and one less port. also the 1st port resonance went up to 250hz

Re: 2 mach5 IXL-18.2.2

also ordered the subs today
Know what's fun? Watching your friendly neighborhood post office worker try to wrestle the shipping carton for an IXL 18.2.2 off of a set of metal shelves :D

As to the filtering, I'm running a Reckhorn B-2 from CSS in BC. It's a little more costly than the older B-1, but has a more flexible subsonic filter. Won't do lowpassing though. Mine was a little over $100 shipped. Just a suggestion.

I agree on the B2. I just built a ported at 19 hz and it needed the b2, I would imagine that you would get more out of the sub with one tuning your sub even lower than mine. Bob from CSS says that the b2 is much more accurate and is a better unit all the way around. $90 shipped if you live in the US from CSS
