Im curious here, first off, Im going to build a 320l sonotube which will allow me to get my drivers up and running in my room. Now while I have them running I would like to design (dual) attractive looking boxes for my room... In box format, the 320l will be much larger then I would like...

How much difference In performance will I be looking at.... ?

I saw that Illka built his TC-2K sonotube as a 270l, and was happy with the performance upon measurements, and I thought they looked good...

I could get along better with a 9.5^3 easier in my room... is it going to be a drastic change..?

I am not sure what will happen but in my experience you will sacrifice higher end performance with a bigger box and get better performance down low. My box is only 6.5 cubes and it plays down to 18 hertz no problems.

The top end remans unchanged. The performance of the 270 liter box can be seen directly from Ilkka's measurements - you'll notice that <40hz distortion is extremely low, even at high output levels. The larger enclosure with a lower tune gets more solid extension at the cost of that distortion increasing a little bit. If you have the space, I think it's worth it, as the distortion levels down low will still be spectacular, but if not, it won't be a huge difference - the gain in extension is all in the rumble zone.

I would really love to go big with that box, but I just can't fit it in the places where I have my current subs... and they are in the perfect location, and FR right now is great. I'll try out the sonotubes for a while until I have more time to build some sexy boxes... Too many **** projects right now...

Gotta finish up my Hot Tub Deck, its been raining here ever since I started 2-3 weeks ago.. so Progress has been quite slow...

A proper 260 liter or larger box is a pain - you may very well end up keeping the sonosubs :T

Funny, my TC-2K's are sitting on the floor right next to one of my SVS subs, and I was explaining to "one of" these girls Im seeing what I had in mind with the sonotube, and she just looked at me crosseyed, and said.... "In here? Your going to take those pretty looking boxes out and put those in here?" HAHAHAH Yup For now....

I felt like telling her... when you pay the mortgage you can choose the decor...

I will be shooting for 2 - 270 liter boxes though..... Large room... 8200^3

Thanks iggster... I saw your chart, and looks like you have great output with that box... So 9.5 cubes should do me just fine... and I can just live with that size...

Im really looking forward to designing a well laid out box, that is as pretty as the look of the SVS's though... but that will take me some time... of which I really don't have alot of...

Mines is gonna be very pretty I will be moving out in about 1 month or so and since I am taking it apart I am gonna drop off the box at a body shop to have it painted high gloss black.

I also made this for it today, in the pix it still needed more sanding and I also painted it flat black. (grill)

Warp, have you decided how you are going to set up your two enclosures in the room? I think you have 2 subs in your setup now if I'm reading correctly, how do you have them placed? I know a lot of people like to have "stereo" subs, but a lot are also in the dual-corner load camp. I suppose it really depends on your room.

Hey Owen... I currently have 2 SVS, a Plus/2 and a Plus in opposing corners, and seeing as I have a large room Im going to go with the same placement...
Measurements with my SMS-1 are ruler flat in this room.. And I bump in a house curve of about 6-8 db... Ceilings are from 8ft to 20ft and open to other areas...

What about laying the one near that bay window/leather chair horizontally ala Ilkka's sub. You might have already thought of that though...

Im really going back and forth here like an idiot, but maybe I'll end up building boxes..
Either way, I'll be down to a 270 liter or so....

Looks like TC-Sounds is going to be shipping out my 2 - 18" passives if they haven't already done that... wouldn't let me change my order to more 15" TC-2K's...

Oh well... more toys to play will for when I have more time...
Or I can sell them...

I'd use that rear corner under the surround for one of the subs - get all the free boundary gain you can. You'll also want to take the SMS out of the loop when you finish these.

That would be the plan there steve with the SMS... but safety first... I know that it will protect my drivers.
Those are old pics, and I have all the wiring in the walls now... I might just put a sub back there....

I like the idea of one of the subs under the surround, it looks fairly out of the way, and like Steve said, you'd get a little corner loading. Then again, if you've played around with location to get the current placement (and the toe in?) then it might be a good place to start with the new ones. Also, very nice room!

I have actually thought about that corner behind the chair under the surround...
I'll play around with it... If I put it back there, I won't have such size constraints either... That would put both subs under the surrounds... Odd layout for a room, but it works out fantastic, and sounds great in here as well.... Im running a 6.2 with a full array of Paradigm Studio's .v4 'n Rotel - 1095

I really like the look of my SVS subs, and was considering going with a downfiring installation, as I have seen a number of people using the TC-2K's in sonotubes... I have a feeling I would be OK with it... What do you guys think...?

Just bought a nice Rigid table saw yesterday so I can finish the decking on my hot tub install... and build my boxes, almost done with that project...

Warp, I'm a big fan of downfiring subs. It's easy to kind of disguise them, it's harder for a kid or pet to lean on the driver and wreck it, and it gives you a bit more flexibility with placement.
