As I am giving the entire front stage of my small Home Theater a bit of a 'DIY' revamp, I am also hoping to pay a bit of attention to the bottom end at the same time. For this, I am looking for a pair of 6.5" Mid-Woofers or Sub-Woofers to integrate into the system. I prefer a pair both for asthetics as well as flexibility.

6.5" Mid-Woofer, or "Small" Subwoofer DIY Driver Choices.
------------------------------------------------------------
During my short search, here are some common candidates that I quickly came across:
(listed most affordable to most expensive).

- e3.6 6.5" ($40, Elemental Designs)
- Tang Band W6-1139SI 6.5" ($50, Parts-Express.com)
- Exodus EX-Anarchy 6.5" ($75, DIYcable.com)
- SDX7 6.5" ($100, CreativeSound.ca)

I would like to keep the MAX Cost/Driver to about $100/each, as this will not be my entire source of sub-bass.
I plan on running 2 units, each in their own simple/sealed box and powering each with it's own Bash300 Plate Amplifier (as I already own 1).

The general idea, other than flexibility with each being independant units, is that the 2 boxes will be my 'always on' and 'any-volume-level-friendly' sources of bass, eventually backed up by an on/off switchable 15"-18" project of it's own later on down the road, THAT being the final 'thumper'.

Can anyone comment on the woofers in the above list, or maybe add another woofer or 2 that I should consider ?

I would like to stay with a pair of 6.5" drivers if possible, but may consider a pair of 8" if cost effective and easy to get alternatives are available.

Thanks in advance,
Allan

did you ever get further along with this project?
Unfortunately NO, as I have been focusing on my Car Audio system as of late. Now that winter is looming, the car will go into storage and I can do a 'winter' project with the Home Theater.

I did however decide to use a pair of 8" drivers instead.

The plan is basically this:

Each 8" will be 8ohms. 1 will be ALWAYS ON, 1 will be a switched/parallel connection so that my BASH300 Amplifier will feed a single 8ohm 8" 150w RMS, then once the second 8" is switched on, impedance will drop down to 4ohms and the amp will deliver 300w RMS between the pair. This is the best I can think of for an 'Apartment Friendly' type of setup, although I live in a house. My wife is not a big bass fan.....I however, AM ;)

As I said previously, this will all be backed up by an additional 15" or 18" single powered subwoofer that only plays down low (50 or 60hz and lower, 18-24db/oct). The 8's will run up to 120hz, as they will be reinforcing either 3" or 4" main drivers in my 'soundbar' (3 basic MTM's) that I will use for Left/Center/Right channels as shown in the picture above, in a tripple ported, 3 chambered single enclosure....although perhaps only the Center will be an MTM with the Left/Right sections being 2-ways only.

I really hope this all works out, as I like the 'compact' nature of everything.....very 'integrated' and singular.

Cheers,
Allan

I'll put in a vote for the Trio8 sub-woofer since you decided to go with 8" woofers. I just built a ~2 cu ft ported sub using one of these and it does amazingly well for that size driver. I'm running about 120 watts... they are 8 ohms, so they fit your switchable amplifier setup, and also fall into your price category. Creative Sound no longer carries them, but I think they are available elsewhere on the web if you do some hunting.
