I have this problem but have been living with it for a long time. Its just some times I try to come here and the site wont load and I have to surff around the web some where else for like 5 min and try again and it usually works. This has been going on for some time now.

It is most likely not the Shack's server that is causing the problem... otherwise we would be dozens of complaints and if it were that bad, we probably would never keep anyone around because the same thing would be happening to every person that visited.

If you think about it, it only makes sense that if it were the Shack's server that everyone would be effected the same... even me.

As explained about, it is generally somewhere between the end user and the Shack's server where the problem lies. Most likely if you visited another site that followed the same traceroute as that of the Shack, you would experience problems with them as well, because you are crossing over the same hop that is causing the problem.

If you are still experiencing the problem you might try running "tracert www.hometheatershack.com" from your command prompt and it may tell you wherein lies the problem.

Re: Forum Use Tips Thread

Help! I am new and far away in South Africa. I am enjoying the forum and looking around at stacks of information. Trouble is that pages take very very long to load. Maybe the very long under sea cable at fault. Our broadband here is not the best but improving quickly of late. I use many American sites, specially the big electronics companies and most are quite quick.
Can you suggest anything?

I moved your other post to here and deleted your last message. Be sure to read our forum rules about posting in the correct place and double posting. :T

We are not experiencing any issues from our end that I am aware of. If there is an issue on our end it will effect everyone and we would have numerous complaints. Every so often, people will have an issue to eventually learn it is something going on with their own ISP, their computer... or a hop between them and us, which we have control over none of these. You also mentioned Chrome... I had lots of problems with it when I tried it... that may be your issue.

Thanks Sonnie, I really have read you rules several times. There is quite a bit to remember. I had been tying to find a way to get help with the slow loads and was taking so long I just put it in the help section. Subsequently I saw the question about load errors so thought I should answer and made a point of cross-referencing. I still have the problem and it is very irritating as I was having a good conversation with Sub-Junkie Dylan about horns.
This evening I opened IE and went to the shack and while waiting for it I visited Stanford University, Electronics world, Wolframalpha, The Audio Engineering Soc, NXP, ON semi and the acustics forum, looked at a page or two on each, read the news, filled in a form, downloaded a PDF and was still waiting for HTS to load. So it doesnot seem to be my ISP nor the browser nor the jump to USA. I am sorry if it is out of your control but it is definately a problem for me.
Appologies for breaking the rules, I was (am) just trying to give you good feedback.
I really do appreciate your tight rules and strict enforcement. There is such lack of discipline and ethics in the world and indeed in Africa, this is quite refreshing.

While I appreciate the feedback, if it is not on our end, there is not much we can do.

The best guess I can think of is there is a bad hop between you and us that is causing the issue.

Not much either of us can do about that... other than hope it gets resolved.

I am just not sure what to tell you. I wish I had a solution, but I don't.

We can look at a few things:

Bring up your command box (Run >> cmd)... type in the following:

ping hometheatershack.com

Then enter.

Copy and paste the results here.

Then type the following:

tracert hometheatershack.com

Then enter.

Copy and paste the results here.

To copy and paste in that box you have to use the Menu >>> Edit (top left corner of the cmd box).

There seems to be something different about connecting to the Shack servers. It seems to be a timing issue. It is a combustion of problems apparently because I do not have a problem on any other site. I have been only intermittently able to connect from any of my machines at home for nearly a week. Nothing has changed in the system here. I have machines running XP, vista, and 7, have cleared caches, tried resetting the router and cable modem, checked for any filtering, cleared dns caches all to no effect. If I bypass the router and go directly to the modem I can get through. I can get on using other networks. When I run traces I get time outs with the router so I have to conclude that something has changedthat makes this router (D-link DI-624) and will try changing it out. In the meantime I have limited access to the Shack. I can get in using the phone as with this message.

Yeah... it sounds like you are having an issue with your router. Why it is only an issue with the Shack is beyond me. I will mention this to our server techs and see if they have any ideas.

Strange things do happen at times.

Can you two give me your IP addressess (www.whatismyip.com) and let me make sure we are not blocking your IP address for some reason. I am not saying it is for sure, but it may be that your ISP IP made a blacklist we use.

You can PM this to me please.

Thanks!

Replacing the router did solve the problem. I am still wondering why it was an issue only for this site. I would get time outs when I would run a trace. Sent the IP in PM for TA.

Thanks for your efforts, I know this is difficult. Unfortunately I am not an expert on IP at this level. I will try your suggetions. Have requested help from my ISP.
If anything it is getting worse. This morning I clicked the link in your PM email at 10.22 SA time (GMT-2) and the page eventually completed loading at 11.17 - nearly an hour later. But it does eventually load and everything seems to work but going to another page starts the wait all over again.

Stuart... I will use the IP address you registered with and have made 16 of your posts with.

Also, if you can get someone to help you with the trace route (tracert) to hometheatershack.com ... this would be good for us to help you trouble shoot the problems.

Leonard... I forwarded a couple of your IP addresses, but none of them were blocked on our end. That is strange about the router though.
